The Laws Regarding DMT U.S. Federal Law
Alhough never commonly available, DMT was made illegal in the United States in 1966, along with LSD, mescaline, and psilocybin. (The four compounds mentioned in the general introduction to ‘The Psychedelic Experience’ by Leary/Metzner/Alpert).
In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson created the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs by executive order, transferring enforcement of all drug laws from the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, to the Department of Justice. Drug use was now a law-enforcement issue, rather than a public health one.
In 1970, N,N-DMT was classified as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act.
In 1971, N,N-DMT was found to be endogenous to the human body, So, ironically, it is illegal to possess a compound which is in fact naturally inside of all of us.
In 1973, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was created. http://www.dmtsite.com/dmt/information/law.html

Quote:
Augustus Owsley Stanley III, private LSD manufacturer
"On February 21,1965, California state narcotics agents had raided his home in Berkeley--a squat building nicknamed the Green Factory--and charged Augustus Owsley Stanley III with operating a Methedrine laboratory. Now that the case had come to a hearing, every rule in the book demanded he should get a haircut and a conservative suit and start looking like a misunderstood choirboy.
But Owsley wasn't playing along. At one hearing, the short, dark ex-radar technician showed up in denim trousers and jacket; at the next he wore a sharp Italian suit. He broadcast dangerous, edgy resentment rather than decent fear. He managed to beat the charges anyhow. His lawyer argued that although Owsley's home might have looked like a Methedrine lab could scarcely be said to look like anything else, in fact, nevertheless no completely synthesized Methedrine had been found. So Owsley was free.
At this point, according to the scenario held in common by narcs and drug people, a chemist who was lucky enough to escape the law should disappear gratefully into the woodwork.
However, the state of California still held the lab equipment it had confiscated during the bust, and Owsley wanted it back. It was his equipment, and he meant to use it. He sued the state for it and got it back.
Only then did Owsley disappear, slipping off for a few weeks to Los Angeles with his girlfriend, who until a few months before had been a graduate chemistry student at the University of California. When they returned to Berkeley in April they had what he'd really been wanting to make: LSD. Somewhat dubiously his Berkeley friends said they'd try the funny-looking vitamin capsules that were slightly deformed from having been dosed with LSD out of an eyedropper.
To their astonishment, it really was LSD. In fact it was very strong LSD. It was the strongest LSD they'd ever had, devastatingly strong in an almost heavy-handed way that recalled Owsley's own insistent manner. "Oh, hey," he told them in his mysterious, faintly irritable way, "those first ones were too heavy. You only should have taken half." But even when he claimed he'd gotten the dosage worked out, this was still exceptional LSD. Under the name Bear Research Group, Owsley had already ordered the raw materials to make a million and a half doses."

Around this time Owsley also began studying The Kybalion, a book of purported ancient wisdom that elucidates the seven basic principles of alchemy, which he describes as "mental transformation," explaining, "It was never about transforming substances. Those were all allegories. The lead and the gold is the lead of the primitive nature into the gold of the enlightened man. Alchemy didn't talk about lead into gold until it had to deal with the church in the early Middle Ages."
For Owsley, The Kybalion "was perfect because it put into total context all the things I had experienced on acid. The universe is a creation entirely within a being that is outside time and space, and dreaming what we are. Everything is connected, because it's all being created by this one consciousness. And we are tiny reflections of the mind that is creating the universe. That's what alchemy says."
To generate enough cash to purchase the raw materials to make LSD, Owsley and Cargill began making and selling methedrine in a makeshift bathroom lab in Berkeley. On February 21st, 1965, police raided the house and confiscated various chemicals, including a substance they wrongfully identified as speed. Owsley hired the vice mayor of Berkeley as his attorney, who "forced them in court to furnish us with a sample, which we submitted to an independent laboratory that proved them wrong, leading to the dismissal of all charges."
After obtaining a court order that made the police return his lab equipment, Owsley and Cargill split for Los Angeles. Because the materials needed to synthesize LSD were still only available to serious researchers, he formed the Bear Research Group and paid $4,000 every three or four weeks to the Cyclo Chemical Corporation for bottles of lysergic monohydrate, the basis for LSD.

Hmmm...what a coincidence. I vaporized 30mg of DMT this morning and had what I would judge to have been one of my top-ten most euphoric of psychedelic experiences.
It was simultaneously and filled with love. I was so grateful for the experience.
Hugely thankful for your creation and maintenance of the "Today in Psychedelic History" thread, Learyfan. Long may you reign!

I would like to hear more about your DMT experience, NB. A year later, do you still think it was beneficial or transformative? It's interesting that you said it was really euphoric. You never hear of people mention euphoria when they describe the DMT experience. It's all about things they see, etc.
But anyway, today is the 55th anniversary of Owsley's first lab bust. There's precious little info out there about that event. So I wish I had more to add this year but I don't.

It looks like I haven't explained what I think happened with the Green Factory bust. I guess I was hoping to come across more information, but I don't think I will. What I believe happened, based on newspaper clippings and excerpts from books, is that the Green Factory was busted on January 6, 1965, while Owsley was out of town. Then I believe he either turned himself in or was eventually arrested on February 21, 1965. I think the facts got muddied and everyone started to say that the Green Factory was raided on February 21st.
