Black squishy rot spots on San Pedro cutting: cut or wait?
    #28195772 - 02/20/23 08:59 AM (11 months, 1 day ago)

Hi community,

Would you operate on the following cutting? It's my first and the 2 squishy black spot worry me (less so the white dots or the yellowish skin). It arrived quite healthy and has been 3 weeks in a room at 10 degrees with little light, and admittedly not enough air circulation. I think that the squishy bits were touching the cushionning below and I've now turned it over.

This video makes me want to wait:
(at 28 sec: Unnecessary surgery) but i'd love if an informed pair of eyes could confirm this.

Your cactus is unfortunately not looking too happy...but fear not..these plants are very resilient and can bounce back if the right conditions are met.

It has a slight scale infection(last pic)
Seems a little dehydrated and possibly got a fungal infection which is causing the dark blotches.
(Normally from soil pathogens//too much water//humidity//stress//or sometimes poor light)

To get it back on track I'd start off by taking a firm but not hard brush and gently remove all the little white scales without damaging the outer layer of the cactus.
Pot into some well draining potting mix and give a little sprinkle of water(don't overdo it-just a tiny bit-wait for it to completely dry then repeat)
Then place in a warm spot that gets good light and air.

Thank you so much for your detailed and optimistic news!

I will gently brush the white scales. I understand that you don't suggest to cut it in any way.

I wanted to wait for spring to pot it, horizontally, let it rest in a light 15 degrees room another 2 months. But upon your recommendation I may pot it now, would you recommend to pot it vertically?

Cut and dust with sulfur. Looks like rot or an infection. Sacrifice the rotting parts for the good of the cactus.

Thank you for the tip. Newbie question: do you mean to cut away the rotten bits on the side? or do you mean to cut the whole section through to the other side?

Amputating the rotten section and re-rooting the healthy section is your best bet. You could try to chop off the rot if you want but it might leave the cactus maimed.
Make sure you disinfect the blade between every cut.

You can also spray that scale off with the hose, much easier

After amputating a doing a large ablation on the side, the cactus is now resting and drying. Let's see if it can root when spring arrives.
