tattoo questions

I am thinking about getting a large tattoo on my hip. Some sort of feathers spanning back on to my glutes. Or some sort of nature/tree/etc tattoo. I think maybe even a mural of different things. I am undecided and looking for ideas. I have 6 tattoos, but they are not as large as this will be. I have a few questions. 1. I want a very talented tattoo artist. How can I find one? 2. Should I ask someone to draw it? 3. How do I find someone? And do I pay them? thank you so much.

1: go to some tattoo shops around your area and look through their flash books/ portfolios they have done and find someone who's style matches something you would like. You could also find an artist online like instagram for example then book an appointment and travel there. 2: once you have found someone who you are confident does work that you like and are seriously considering paying them talk to them about your idea and see what their process is like. Some artists require down payments on the drawing etc. 3: go searching find a good artist and meet them and talk to them in person. If you don’t like what they tell you then keep searching. 👌

100% agree with checking out their artwork.
Things to look for when you're talking to an artist, in my opinion, are as follows:
if your artist gets excited about the tattoo or has some connection to the source material, that's a good sign. An artist with a connection to a piece is more likely to want it to look even more badass.
Art style. if their main style(s) of art are not what you're looking for, then it's usually better to find someone else
Take note of whether they try to add shit in that you don't necessarily want. I've had artists try and talk me into doing pieces that they want to do or modify the tattoo to incorporate something I'm not crazy about. They can be pushy and silver-tongued. Just make sure your vision is clear and clearly represented

There are none where I live. I have looked at all of them in a 1 hour radius. They are ok. Not great. I have been looking online.

Sounds like u may have to travel to a large city to find an artist that fits your tattoo expections.

yeah. it's 100% worth it to travel far for this, though, because after all.... It's permanent. so you spend an extra hundred dollars on gas... that's 100 divided by the rest of your life that you have to look at it. fair trade in my opinion

Exactly. Take your time. Wherever you live there has to be some talented artists not too far away. I don't necessarily trust internet ratings, but you can look up "best tattoo artists near you", or in the closest big city.
I actually know nothing about tattoos, but would guess the good ones have a portfolio of pictures, with some showing themselves in the picture to authenticate their work.

I keep looking. I have been finding more on Tik Tok then online. I like seeing an artist that can do more then one style. Very impressive to me. I found a shop in Portland I am watching. I am undecided on a tattoo, other then I know an idea of what I want. No rush.
