Slow progress on my zaps, but they comin

Anyone have any idea what this thing is?

I was worried it might be an insect egg casing at first but I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of fungus.

Hi!

after testing and investigation the verdict is that this is subtropicalis - not zapotecorum.

Sorry for mistake )

Zap Tapla day 49. I tried to dial back the moisture a bit in the tent because it was getting realllllly wet in there. Then they started to abort. So we’re back to reallllllly wet. Fingers crossed at least a few make it to maturity so I can snag some spores. Might snag a clone from one of the viable pins in case I lose the rest of em

Looks like you’ve got a good culture there MojaveMyc. I went spawn to sub 58 days ago with mine. I’ve got them pretty wet too, fogging them every 30 mins. I dialled my moisture back and a few of the caps quickly darkened at the tips so I went back to super wet again and they recovered well.

It does seem to be yup. Some kind of Peziz sp I guess. It grew about double that size and this morning I removed it.

Meanwhile the zaps are now steaming along. I upped the temps a few days ago from 18c to 21c.

I love how these look with their conical caps

First jar finished yesterday and trying to decide what to use for a sub since I can't get any compost/manure mix atm. Thinking maybe coir and finely chopped hay (or similar) but not sure. Either way...:omgawesome:  Have a couple unfiltered BRF LCs that took off like crazy too and just put them to grain yesterday
Want so bad to spawn that first jar so maybe just coir if the local store doesn't have hay...
Appreciate all the people who have contributed to this thread btw :hatsoff:

Well… my flipping furnace went down for a few days during the coldest snap of the winter so far and it got pretty cold in my grow area. So after months of babying these things they have suffered some hardship on the finishing stretch. Turned into a bit of a mess but they look to be recovering well now and it seems I’ll be getting more flushes.

I did 1:3 spawn ratio just coir as substrate with pasteurized peat lime casing. These fruits, although plentiful, came up pretty small so for the next run I’ll be experimenting a bit to try to find what can be done to improve that. They do seem to be growing quite a bit faster since I bumped up the heat a couple weeks ago (minus that few days of extreme chilliness). I have a feeling the next flush is going to bring larger more vigorous fruits.

Not a bad result nonetheless! What sub are you going for next time? I’m gunna start some of these on agar very soon. Love the ‘woody’ looking stipes.

Not bad at all! Are you going to clone any of them? Which lineage is this?

I’m thinking I might add around 20% hardwood fuel pellets to the coir. I got some 1 litre trays that I can fit 4 at a time in my fruiting chamber so I might try 2 with hwfp, 2 without and then vary the spawn ratio also.

I know man I’m actually in love with how these look. The texture of the stipes and shape of the caps are so beautiful. My favourite species to grow so far are Subtropicalis and these. I love Pans too but I’ve been finding them a bit frustrating to find good strong clean cultures, whereas zaps and Subtrops seem *almost* bulletproof.

These are La Martinica Zaps that I got from Tim Pigg, creator of toque. He’s so great, I really like him, Yoshi Amano and Julian Matucci. I’m probably not supposed to say that here but whatever. They are all doing such great work and everyone should be aware of them.
I probably won’t clone any of these but if I see some large sturdy fruits come up in the next flushes I will. I think this MS culture is already pretty much isolated anyhow because I used primordia from a T1 plate to transfer but still, it’s ingrained in me to only clone fruit that are displaying the phenotype I’m looking for.

No clusters here yet lol. I do have a few pins of Tapalpa forming though.

Valdivia is coming along. Still got a little of the weird powdery look along the top edge but I think I can finally shake it with another transfer. It's not really affecting the LC or tests but I just don't like it. Not really sure if it's just the way the mycelium is in that particular sector, or if it's some sort of infection. The lower 2/3's seem to be devoid of it so I'll likely take from there.
I forget exactly how old this one is.. probably about a week, but I'll get that updated when I get home.

Psilocybe sect. Zapotecorum (Valdivia) T4
