Noice thread brother.

By no means great but ti's the only plate pin I have right now. BK Mak on an old ass germ plate.
Started dealing with condensation and slower growth with such big temp fluctuations atm, thinking of insulating the closet and sticking LEDs in there for my grains and plates.

Y'all might enjoy these cannibal plate pins from a while back. They're FP+ plate pins that I cloned. Then plate pins grew directly off that cloned pin... Pinception

Popping a mature plate open and letting it exchange it's air and sealing it back up often causes a few plins to form for me.

Interesting... I have a Cosmoplex ATL7 plate sitting around that I have been hoping would start to pin. I think I'm gona open that sucker up and see what happens. It looks like it's starting to make stones and that's not what I wanted lol honestly I almost opened it earlier today and thought, no I should leave it be so thanks for the encouragement

Harvested today. Plin clone shoe boxes are so easy it’s pretty much all I grow now. Spore to agar, transfer, let the plates pin, clone the pin and then to grain. I don’t care how good and clean a plate looks. If it doesn’t make a pin, it doesn’t go to grain.

How long does it take your plates to pin, on average? I made 32 GT transfers on the 8th, to 97mm no-pours. Thinking of just letting them all ride until one of them pins... Hope they don't dry out, though. Should I get them into a mini water tub?
This strain is my least cooperative. Got it from LC from a nice guy in my province. I don't want to give up on it. Maybe it's senescence? I should try breeding it...

I don’t keep track of it. However, just my experience is it’s all over the place. If I take a tiny transfer and it’s 19°C, it could take a month longer than a larger transfer at 25°C. Two plates I think are identical could pin 2 weeks apart for a reason I’ll never know.
If I had to answer, I’d say a month, but don’t quote me.🤷

this is and old ape plate that starter to blob and pin , ive take pins from plates other before, but testing them to see if they are different from the mother culture well.. pins from ms plates should be considered individually different clones.. ? id like to think yes or am i delusional

Good idea for a thread. Plate pins are the bomb.

Even though not technically plins, these cup pins are almost as dope. Dont ask me why im getting brown plins from ape revert. I got a single leucistic pin clone.

Yeah my growth always looks way more uniform and rhizo when it's in a petri. cups have their purpose but I honestly think you need petris to get the full enjoyment from the process. So much easier to take pics and do xfers...

Inside a spawn jar. These are eager.
This was a big plin from a clone culture plate that went whole into lc brine and onto grain.

Yeah I need to ask him for a swab or print I would love to grow that out. Love the Mononoke associations it brings up from my young adulthood even though I know it’s generally meant as “forest spirit” in Nippon

Quick question from a former lurker on this thread, a total plin virgin, now afflicted with severe pin lust, plinvy even:
I saw Nichrome mentioning opening a plate briefly, for air exchange, to encourage pinning. I'm assuming that a mature, more or less fully covered plate/jar will have similar resistance to contamination that fully colonized spawn does, just before spawning to bulk. Is this correct? Do I open the jar (in my case) just once, or once every couple of days or similar? Is there anything else I can do to encourage plins? I gotta have me a plin people. Help me out here.

If you’re asking about opening your plate in open air, don’t. Regardless of whether your plate contams out, if you get a plin it won’t be clean anymore.

Any yeast. It doesn’t matter. “Nutritional Yeast” is simply deactivated yeast, dead cells. Brewers yeast is viable yeast. Since you’ll be sterilizing the yeast when you make your plates, you’ll turn viable yeast into deactivated yeast anyway. Buy whatever’s cheaper since it’s all the same to us.

I'm pretty sure they have different nutrient profiles. Brewers yeast could work great, but I don't think they are exactly the same.

That's lovely.
Don't worry if it doesn't look PE yet. The PE I've grown didn't look like PE at the plin / pin stage.
Kind of like a scrawny kid that grows up really powerful.
Though all pins kind of look PE, if you consider the main identifying pheno of PE to be "cap doesn't open much, cap stays close to stem so looks like a dick."

PE can take 2x as long as other cubes, at all stages, but especially in the tub.
There's a theory that this longer time is why it's stronger. May be so because I've got a non-PE pheno of a different cube that takes as long as PE sometimes and is well stronger than the shrooms it came from.
A good tip with PE is when it's on grain in the jar, let it sit 5 to 7 days longer than when it looks fully consolidated. PE does well if you do that.
Sometimes I do that with other varieties.
Just don't do it long enough that you start getting shrooms. If you see any pins (Jins? jar pins? haha.) send to tubs.
Before those plins drop spores, I'd clone the biggest one. Chop it off above the bottom so you dont' get other mycelium, and push it into a fresh plate.
Plins are good to clone, at least that's how I got the strong slow pheno I described.

APEU. Plin of a plin of a plin, I’ve lost track of the generation. I placed 4 agar wedges from plated plins. And one plin split length wise when I was harvesting it. Half went to agar, half to wbs . It’s the little pecker at 2 o’clock.

Been having some issues with the Vader Smelly sent out a few months ago. Lots of stuff going on lately and I've kind of lacked time for a bunch of plates that are sitting around. Bored the other day I was thumbing thru them and came across this little guy, he's resting comfortably in a quart of millet now.

I took some clones of it to see how well it does. This dish in itself was a tissue sample from a plate that grew a tiny little lion's mane fruit. I actually posted it here on page 6. I had to clean up the vendor LC as it wasn't clean. (hell the spores they sent me were cleaner).

Actually low nute plates, plin sooner than a high nute does. It's a biological reaction in which the mycelium knows its best chances of survival is to fruit incase more sustenance is located quickly.
As you can there are so many knots that never progressed further this is also normally seen with low nute media. Increases the chances of sporulation given the odds, of not even having enough food for maturity.

This may well be a stupid question, but...
I keep donor plates for a while so I can see if they got contaminated during the transfer (so I can learn from the ones where they did). Lots of these stay clean, but pin like crazy. Looking through the posts, likely due to the fresh air they get.
If I have a nice healthy plate pin, does it go to the next plate, or is it worth putting it straight to grain despite the likelihood it'll take forever to colonise?

Up to you! I send half to grain and half to a plate. It takes a long time, but it’s a good way to test the plin.

Tamp(ATL7) I put various pin clones and stone clones in together. The ones that merged smoothly got transfers. I don't know, I was bored. This one made a nice cluster of pins.

I have a question for those with experience growing from plins.
I got some really healthy looking and fully inoculated jars of Colombian Rust Spore that I a2g'd from a plin culture, should I expand them even though they're an untested culture? My main concern is that since it's untested, it might not perform / the variety might be a revert.
If I do expand it'd be based on the following criteria 1. it's a plin, so it's genetically disposed to fruit 2. the mycelial growth is vigorous and healthy and i'm confident in the jars
Would be great to hear of more experienced cultivators experiences of plins.

If it's telling you to expand it, it's probably right.

I wouldn’t expand an untested plin culture for the reasons you stated as well as the possibility of low potency and or small fruit.

I always run a small tub of something untested while still working with it on agar for further use if it performs. I run a lot of plin clones. Fun stuff!!!

Agreed. But wouldn’t start g2g to expand it until I knew what was what.

A GT plin, I think this is looking pretty good? I put another straight to grain and that went bacterial.

3mo old gym purpuratus plate I found. Kinda neat because ~95% of the time gyms just form weird little knots on plates it seems like.
Extra credit: how many plins can you count growing up the stipe of the larger plin @ 3 o'clock

Only real cultivators get that special feeling watching a cloned plin start to fuzz up
Bonus: gem studded puffball clone plate both pinning and massively infected with multiple mold and bacteria sp.

First plate pin, and this T1 plate from Smelly really wants to reproduce! Thanks Smelly! Planning on sending 1 or 2 to grain...

I was surprised because I have really old plates that never pinned. I was wondering what all this weird stuff was and found this thread with Smelly posting similar looking stuff. Hoping I don't ruin this...

Nat plins. These are derived from previous plins. You can see the cap in the plate center. In MudaFukka jars there’s no overlay. I am only sending plin to grains for my tub grows.
