On grain, nat and cube myc look the same. Once the jar is colonized 100%, nat myc might form big (BIG) tomentose clouds at the top, especially if left to consolidate. It's not always a thing, and some cubes will do that, too.

Safest bet is to spawn each jar to a shoebox and see what you get.

Unfortunately I used pints this go around because the wife has all the quarts in use. I gather they like a 1:1 or 1:1.5 spawn ratio, would 1:3 cause them to overlay like nuts if they display that trait?

How do these do in bags? I've always preferred fruiting cubes in them compared to boxes or tubs.

I don't believe that overlay is an issue with this species as a whole.
The problem is that very few genetic lines have left South Africa and unfortunately the first variety/ genetic line to come to America IS very prone to overlay.
When this species was first distributed in the U.S. all the prints that circulated came from the same genetic line that did overlay very badly.
It took about a year more or less for other genetics to cross the pond. The newer genetics don't have this problem and grow pretty much like regular cubes.
Also if you look at posts by members who live in South Africa their lines don't  have this issue.

First flush on this shoebox.  I soaked it for two hours.  Hopefully the next flush pushes out some bigger fruits.  Super happy with the pin set though.  It was around 170g wet.

My Natalensis always wants to escape agar plates or jars with thick rhizomorph strands... They are strong!

I mixed some TAT and Natalensis lc a while back and gave them a high speed stir.

Looks like the TAT may have won out in the end, ill wait and see.

Something like this germ plate crawling up the swab to escape?

I am not so sure about that. We have passed around a clone culture over here, which doesn't produce overlay and in turn might create this impression.

I started a new culture for fun (directly from spores of the culture mentioned above) which resulted in a overlay producing culture.

Made up another 3 unmodified shoe boxes at 1:3. The shoe boxes have the same floor dimensions, but are taller. Hopefully they work out OK.
