How to tell Mexicana A from the fake "Mexicana A"?

No, mexicana "A" IS ps. mexicana NOT ps.tampanensis.
If you search back on the history and location data for this variety it is  clearly mexicana. Sporeworks is the source of this variety. Check their site and compare their mex A to what is being offered here now.
The confusion comes in because a few years ago someone (I believe it was the member celestialexplorer) grew a mislabeled print and distributed those genetics as mex A. Others may have also mistakenly  distributed them.
If you look at fruitings of mex A prior to afew years ago you will clearly see that they are very different from what is being distributed as mex A today.
The sister variety of mex A is mex B. They were sourced from the same genetics and again are clearly Mexicana.

If what Rumblestrip is correct (and keeping in mind Alan's speculation that it is tamp not mex), what are the characteristic differences between the two to help differentiate between them?  Also, what should we call the tamp var?  Was it simply a Tampanesis var Philosopher Stone?  Is the fruiting difficulty attributed to which? What is the latest from Alan on the subject? Thanks to the Shroomery community for clarifying on this muddled strain.

~2y ago I had some P. tamp jars colonize but never go stony. I didn't know then that it can take multiple months for tamp to fruit. My P. galindoi jars in comparison took around the normal time, maybe a little longer, as cubes to fruit.

If you've got two to try side by side, maybe comparing "fruiting" times is enough?
