I assume that’s why the only spot producing around here is a pseudo wetland. Being in a moderate drought the last week or two really stunted the season. Most common mushroom out there yesterday were deer mushrooms in the plains.
I'm curious, do you have habitat pics or description of the wetland area? I tried looking back but this thread is moving pretty fast. I have a hunch that I'm missing them in wetland areas up here. It would make sense. The spots are in the floodplain not far from the river/streams.</font></font>

Look for big bends in the river where flooding occurs... It is called the "Crooked River" after all They hide well up here though

I have not posted any so far. I can try to get out and get a few. Unfortunately I won’t post all encompassing pictures as there’s some features that would compromise the privacy of the spot. But essentially it’s a creek that goes through some woods between neighborhoods that’s a pretty low lying area that collects water. Then there’s another creek that feeds into the main one that is a neighborhood drainage.

Thanks and no worries! I didn't realize it was so close to man-made structures. That's very interesting! Got me thinking...

Every spot I’ve found ovoids at so far, is in a conspicuous location. All of them within direct eyeshot of a trail. Some certainly less travelled than others though. That’s really why I wanna crack the box elder groves, you can go for miles there and not see a soul. But either I’m not seeing them or I’m checking the wrong parts in the groves.

Back again to ask another question, and share an update:
I started my experimental colony. Pasturized one section of bamboo, a knotweed stalk, some boxelder logs, some wood chips (not sure what kind, but a different section of the same was growing stropharia, so it is suitable) and some river soil. Immediately by the next morning the mycelia from the stem butts was spreading, if only slightly. Looking up for this one!
My question however, is this: Should I be looking in areas that are slightly flooded right now after they drain a bit? or will the ovoids come up while they're flooded?

Understood. And I want to crack the box elder/wetland code so that I can get out of the loud ass crunching suffocating knotweed, so we have something in common

Southern PA is loving all of this rain...

There are a ton of small clusters about to go completely bonkers that I'll check back on in a few days.

So I went to ALL my spots today, all were completely flooded. I left a large patch of nice ones the other day to give em a couple more days, and they are under a few feet of water now. My wood chips spot is underwater from the nearby pond flooding lol. So I go to the only place left that I know up in the mountain. This place sucks. I find random singles, maybe 4 was the best I found there in a day. So I walk and walk and walk. I find 3 singles, then on my way back I see one nice dark one barely sticking out from the edge of some bushes. As I lean over I realize I am looking at the biggest ovoid patch in the history of mankind. I picked a bag full of the nicer ones, left the smaller ones beat ones. It was a maybe 8x8 foot section, buried in the thick brush. The pic is like maybe 20% of the ones there. When the ovoid gods taketh, they give back. I checked the one spot with the black pins, they are doing good, and as I pull in my driveway when I got home I aware I saw an ovoid sticking out of my landscaping. I hop out of the car and sure as shit it’s a old ovoid with with a few holes in it. I never tried to seed the area, my best guess is it’s from me carrying bags of ovoids around last season and some spores hit my landscaping. Pics are my yard ovoid, black pins progression, and a fraction of the patch I found today. Cheers 🍻

Spike111 ... Great finds!
I took a couple of gratuitous gill-shots a few hours after picking one that I figured I'd share.

Nice finds everyone. This season is quickly starting to outpace last year, at least for me. It’ll be even better once I find some in the groves. Think I’ll crack it by the 9th this month.
Ironically, we mentioned Wispisshrooms earlier, and he posted a 57 minute live earlier today on Instagram of him hunting a box elder grove filled with stilt grass. He’s very worth the follow and while I’m only 9 minutes into it so far, it’s about what I was trying to describe what good content would look like from a hunters perspective.

any general tips for finding ovoids? I feel like I've been searching too finely and not covering enough ground. From all of these pictures they seem to be pretty visible.

Look for patches of woodchips along rivers/streams, it's very helpful to visit parks in lowland riparian areas that border small streams and use mulch landscaping

Things have really heated up:

I thought this was funny (forgive my potato camera once again, I broke it for a second time today): Ovoids colonizing the landscaping fabric/tarp they lay underneath mulch

In those river bends - observe which trees are predominant. Try to stick to older flood planes/debris piles. Look for loamy soil & areas that are protected from the sun. These are flood plain Debris pile - Box elder Once you do find them or the look-a-likes - a simple test, pinch the corner of the cap & wait about a minute - if it turns blue = Ovoids - brown = not. Also pay attention to the smell - once you know it = helps you find others.

Wow nice finds Moria.
Questions for y’all veterans. Some of the spots I’m struggling to find ovoids at was farm land in the 80s/90s. While I’m sure ovoids have moved in by now, would you expect for those places to have less ovoids than those that have been established forest for dozens of not hundreds of years?
