Went out hiking earlier today to look for some salamanders which was successful. The spring peeper frogs are going crazy. Also the nettle is at a stage right now that I did not see until mid March last year.
I'm not sure how many of y'all are weather enthusiasts, but it seems the only threat to our earliest season ever (for most people) is "sudden stratospheric warming". It's essentially just what it sounds like which can cause crazy cold outbreaks like the one we had in 2018 in March and April. However, in talking to some meteorologist friends they think it may be minimized by some other atmospheric factors. One situation could entail a brief half-week cold snap followed by further anomalous warmth, which would be ideal considering some of the alternatives.

Here in Europe we're also having a warm February. January was record-setting. I hope there will be no major cold snaps later. Otherwise, goodbye Apricots 😭

Yeah this week will be fun lol. Thursday will most likely set some temperature records.
We probably won’t see the effects of the SSW until March sometime. Mid March freeze wouldn’t be awful if we then get some anomalous warmth again afterwards. But I’ll update once I have some more information.

kinda sorta, but maybe, uhhhh errmmmmm well, I find them hundreds of times every year(if/when I target them more than a few times), but what do hundreds of them equal? LUL
I think they're fairly common, just not abundant, unless the weather is right. I have found (quite very possibly, but never actually counted) hundreds of them on one spot, but that might only equal half an oz or so dried.
could've been aztecorum, but I cannot confirm their likelihood in NY as compared to caerulipes. I've only tried hunting them briefly, this past fall. Bought a microscope to help ID if I do find any questionables.

Ive tried looking for them a bunch (in NY) but no luck yet
What type of area do you usually find them? and what season?

Check these threads out: Caerulipes 2021
How to find caerulipes
There are some good habitat videos one the first link (maybe), I think by member Icyurmt. But don’t quote me haha, they are somewhere on the site.
I’d say your best bet would be in the Catskills. Lots of beech.

Aside from the other good info shared -- beech beech beech, and august - oct. Ive actually never looked before august [during the last decade I've waited until the first "cool" night - which is when its around 60 or less at night, but that's not backed up by hard data] so they could be out a little earlier, plus I'm in the southern part of NY, so they might pop earlier in the catskills, adirondaks etc if it is soil temperature based or any temperature phenomena that triggers fruiting (although it could be diminishing amount of photons with the change of seasons or chemical triggers from trees and their symbiotic organisms that begin their change.)
I think now is a great time to scout for beech, hemlock, and birch areas. And I try to keep a few different types of areas. You'll hear hemlock a lot, and that's because they like wet areas (don't mind getting their feet wet) which is what I like when it's been dry or sporadic rains. If the rains have been good (not very reliable the last few years) I will walk in beech dominant areas rather than hemlock with birch n beech (ie oak - beech forests) and on real good years I will pass by logs and small sticks and only look for debris piles as they will produce large fruitings like the other species found in woodchips. But on the other hand, if it's been dry, I'll focus hemlock areas(normally mountain creeks/streams/drainage areas) and examine just about ever log and small sticks/chunks of wood. And I'd advise against ever just focusing on big logs, as MANY MANY times I've been checking a big JUICY/wet/moss covered log and don't find any, yet find them on a chunk of wood the size of a baseball or less a few feet away. Also they seem to like to grow out from underneath logs in most conditions(retains moisture better in that scenario) but they do grow right out of the top, especially in wet years when mossy logs are saturated.
Sorry for the off-topic, non ovoid stuff guys. I am here because I plan to hunt, and find them this year, if I can peel myself away from the good spring fishing

Got out yesterday to see how things were going at my spots. No activity but got some good looking mycelium. Ground cover is just starting to come in. Found a deer mushroom which proceeded ovoids by a few weeks last year. The Sudden Stratopsheric Warming effects may be felt in mid March with some below average cold that may put a damper on things.

Interesting, I'm also in southern NY, are you above Bear Mountain or even further south?
Do you just look in state parks or trails?

Everything so far ahead of schedule. Morels are starting pop up in north ga already.

The best part is they grow together. Tried to capture pic with both in it. There’s a lone ovoid hanging out in back ground of this one

Awesome pics Evly. I'm dying out here waiting for things to get firing. @Yaboisty, you're very unlikely to find anything in Cincy this early. But it is a great time looking for spots while the undergrowth hasn't taken over yet.
Talk about the worst time for some cold to come through...

I'm west of the catskills, do most of my roaming from the fingerlakes down to the susquehanna and delaware river areas. I'm only on the trails to explore a new area and/or get to an area, I'm looking for trees and then wander around to find the layout. State parks, city/town/county parks, even some federal lands. Used to have some friends and would find them there too Found a lot of my favorite spots while fishing, many of the parks with little ponds in the woods or wooded river/creek areas have what I'm looking for. I also seem to like rugged areas, but that might just be personal experience/confidence. Lucky to have a lot of forests accessible to the public nearby, and waters.
@soloist If I gotta travel to find em, I will

So I’ve been sitting on a pretty awesome map for the last few years…stumbled upon it during one of my research binges. It’s a Landcover map of the Catskills, from a survey using Landsat data between 1997 and 2001- don’t think the overall vegetation would vary tremendously.
It’s an awesome tool, especially for mushroom hunting.
I contacted the person who created the map and he told me each singular pixel represents 30 meters x 30 meters. (I do have a copy with slightly better resolution, but this is completely serviceable)
with a little ingenuity, you can line up prominent features and create a layover image with another map/ app of your choice to scout what ever area you’d like. I hope some of you guys can put this to good use.
Here is a crappy preview, click the links below for the full resolution.
