Been seeing them around here and there in GA last couple of weeks, figured I’d go ahead and get things kicked off again here. Think we got another good year in store peeps!

The trees are a month and a half ahead of schedule around here. Gonna be a real early start to the season unless we get a radical change to the weather patterns. 60° or higher for the entire ten day forecast. That’s enough to kick off the season by early March.

Climate models like last week had a below average anomaly period for end of February to early March. But now the CFS has above average temperature anomalies through March 27th. Granted the above average March anomalies are not nearly as stark as the February ones have been.
One thing to note with the climate models is they can change on a dime. But since January this has been one of the warmest years on record so far, on pace with years like 2017 and 2020.

Hope it doesn't kick off my peach blossoms early again too, few times recently had early blossoms(beautiful) only to have a winter storm come and kill them off.

It doesn’t look like there’s any recorded finds in AL on INaturalist or mushroom observer, but on Inatty there’s a find about 15 miles north of AL near Tracy City, Tennessee. Probably are there, can’t imagine the topography/climate drastically changing in 15 miles.

Can’t help but to mention the recent environmental impact of the train derailment in NE Ohio, it may have lasting effects considering what we look for.
The train was said to contain multiple hazardous chemicals and the spread is going to be significant. It’s gaining traction in the news now but it happened about a week ago.

It would be really nice to get some professional opinions in here regarding consumption safety of ovoids that come up this spring in that area as well as areas nearby. I don’t know if anyone truly knows the scope of this disaster on ovoids and on the broader environment.

I personally don't think any mushrooms are going to contain vinyl chloride, since it's volatile and should all "dissolve" into the atmosphere and get diluted.
The bigger problem could be Dioxins. Burning PVC creates them, so I think it's not a stretch to say that burning Vinyl chloride could create them as well. These can be somewhat persistent in the environment. Still, I don't think the mushrooms are going to actively take them up.
Just my 2c with some chem background

So early

Quote:
Spring leaf out continues to spread north in southern states, arriving several days to weeks earlier than average (the period of 1991-2020) in much of the Southeast. Oklahoma City, OK is 11 days early, Nashville, TN is 12 days early. Parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Chesapeake Bay are 3-4 weeks early. Much of southern California and Arizona are days to over a week late, while the coastal Northwest is days to weeks early. Las Vegas, NV is one day late. Seattle, WA is a week early.

In doing some historical climate research, I have found that IAD(Dulles) from January 1st to February 15th has been tied for the warmest on record with 1990 with an average temperature of 42.3 degrees. In that same period, 2020 is next with a mean of 40.3 degrees. This has also been the first time in recorded history that Dulles has not had more than a trace of snow from November through January. Dulles in recorded history has never finished with less than 2.6" of snow (2001-2002).

If you had to guess Koods, barring a major freeze, when would you expect DC to start popping based on this warmth and somewhat wet pattern we're in currently?

Trying to think when was the earliest I’ve found them, I think it was mid March.
Yeah one year I found them in mid March then it didn’t rain for 30 days so the season ended up really late
