Climate refugees are liable to be everywhere it seems.
Just driving my mom and her friend back from the airport from Florida, and they were saying that the place they stayed on the beach was not insured because insurance in Florida, between the hurricanes and condo collapse has become so expensive, people cannot afford it. Insurance companies are pulling out of the state because it’s becoming too risky. The economic effects of climate change are causing exploding costs and the people running the state can’t even acknowledge the situation.
They acknowledge the situation. The state of Florida has a state run and taxpayer funded insurance company that will continue to insure people. They paid out something like 17B in payouts past summer after whatever that hurricane was called.
There are some concerns about solvency, because it only took in 3B over the year, so they're gonna have to raise taxes.
The much bigger problem is the reinsurance market. Insurance companies are unwilling to insure insurance companies that operate in Florida, making it unacceptably risky to operate insurance in Florida. Which is why the state, which is very much invested in people not thinking about climate change, is creating a government insurance company, which will be mandated to insure homes in Florida at taxpayer expense.
If Florida is going to have to raise taxes enough to cover this, it sounds like a major issue that could make the state undesirable for business and citizens..

Rudy Guliani's current status as a celebrity is on par with Tammy Faye Baker. He's like a drooling institutionalized guy in a hospital gown. I bet he doesn't even fight his disbarment.

(Bold added by me)
That's the thing. What we should really be asking is what even is the point of private insurance? Insurers are reinsured and so on. If a natural disaster actually occurs, they all put their hands out to the gov't anyway. It just adds extra layers of profit taking middlemen. If taxpayers are going to be ultimately on the hook anyway, what is the purpose of private insurance?

So a middleman can take as much of that taxpayer money as possible before giving it back to said taxpayer, obviously. It’s economics 101.

Yes, and they will (a) raise taxes on the poor and insulate the rich and (b) cry about how taxes are going up because of democrats.
Balls:
Reinsurance market isn't controlled by governments, but by...well, other insurance companies. Like...something of London was one of them. Lloyd's?
Eventually it goes back to governments, but only when it gets really bad. Like, turkey bad.

Yes, Lloyd's. But like you said, when there's an earthquake in Turkey or Katrina makes landfall or anything else that might incur significant losses for the reinsurance players the government(s) ultimately step in with bailouts anyway so how could the public lose by removing several layers of profit motive from the equation?

Assuming if the government was soley in charge, quite alot. Don't get me wrong, the wheels within wheels of transferring liability to some other institution is problematic to say the least. Would the government be able to accurately payout for the actual loss? Thats some trust right there. Look how government raids delegated funds for pet projects, for example....will there be money for the payout?
I did claims in life insurance for awhile....I was the guy that had to break the news that your dead husband's $500,000 term life won't payout because he had meth in his system. Worst conversations ever.
What if there is a legal dispute on what the government pays out? What are the terms for the payout? I doubt you could as easily bring a claim in civil court due to sovereign immunity or the like. It's "easier" for the government to give one lump sum, to x institution....than multiple ones to several claimants. The infastructure needed within the government to handle this would need to be sizeable. How much would that cost? Would it be cheaper....tax wise for your average Joe?

I think it would still be worthwhile. What percentage of the money going in to health insurance in the US is actually spent on medical procedures? Versus the money allocated to the nhs in the UK.
I think it would be more efficient, if not cheaper, to have a "federal insurance" or however you would call it. Any profits would go back to the general fund or something. Instead of lining a CEO's pocket.

They literally bring up the video in the various hearings. As in they play the video.
That’s some fake news.
