Fresh mushroom grow kits
    #28183449 - 02/12/23 06:39 AM (1 year, 10 months ago)

I know a lot of people don't favour this method but it works fairly well for me, maybe a dozen grows so far and only one contaminated box. The do it your own, although it's alot cheaper, it's time consuming and the chances of contamination increases. Anyway I usually grow them on top of a 5w heat mat, again I know alot of dont like this method but it works very well for me, I just wanted to know why people don't like using heat mats?, especially during the UK winter? Without mats in the winter it's very slow growing which increases cgances of contamination.. What are pros and cons of a mat?

Also grow lights, people say its not needed and personally I don't use it either although I have experimented with blue led lights. It slightly improves it in my opinion in terms of look and colour.

People don't like heat mats cause they can end up cooking your containers. You want to heat the air around the containers not the containers themselves.

How does doing it yourself increase risk of contamination? How does growing slow increase the risk of contamination?

Grow kits are a waste of time and money. Even if you've had success with them you're not going to get much love from any regular poster here touting your success with them. The general idea here is to discourage noobs from filling the pockets of the rich and learning nothing. The philosophy behind grow kits is garbage, and it only stand to benefit a few people. We want to benefit all here. No harm intended, but ditch the grow kit and learn to do it yourself if you're already on your 13th grow. You're still wearing diapers and training wheels.

I think you're right about it being cheaper but couldn't be further off from the contamination comment.  Read through our forums a bit and you'll see how many people wish they didn't waste their time and money on a kit when they could have had fruits already.  Getting your substrate prepared by a stranger and shipped to you is just asking for contams.
