Can seeds be started in pure peat moss?

Or is that too acidic?
If it depends on the type of seed, which types might be able to start that way?

I use peat moss in my aquaponics system. I have been directly sowing seeds of all types into the peat directly. Also the soil plugs that are commonly sold for seed starting are mostly peat moss. The kind you add water to and soak before planting into.

That makes sense, and I see in guides that people use it.
Yet I read that it has a ph of 4, so how is that possible? That seems too acidic for seeds.

They’ll germinate just fine, but if you compare them side by side as they start growing with seeds growing in an amended balanced seedling mix they won’t be as green and vigorous. Only speaking from experience with veggies, I bet it depends on the plants.

What amendments would make peat moss suitable?

I’d be outside of my wheelhouse speaking about anything other than veggies, so I don’t know if what I’ve seen would apply to other plants. Also the OP was just a question of can, not what’s best. But here it goes. The best seedling mix I’ve seen Was equal parts peat, dairy compost, and leaf mould (all finely screened), verm, and perlite. Also amended and I don’t remember the ratios but with lime, greensand, blood meal, kelp meal, and rock phosphate(can’t remember if they used soft or brown). I do remember forgetting the lime in one batch and it was clearly visible from the batches that did get lime. I’d think leaf mould could be subed with worm castings. Not that all that’s necessary, the farm I worked for was really fucking good, and the guy who ran it tried a few different blends and he cared a lot about little details and it showed. I think the blend was modeled off of forte V seedling mix.
