Mycelium not growing at surface
    #28172946 - 02/05/23 02:01 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Hey everyone ,

I purchased my 1st SUPA GRO KIT 100% 'MCKENNAII' off Zamnasia (no soaking necessary, ready kit). I know it can take 3 weeks for the first pins to show but there has been 0 changes since day 1, currently on day 5. You can see the Mycelium on the sides inside the cake but the top has not showed any progress. The temperature in my basement is between 19-21C & I use a full spectrum grow light during the day & mist & fan 2x a day. I also used a humidifier in close proximity to increase the humidity of my room from 40-75% in addition to this. Is there anything you can recommend or would you say it is normal that nothing has changed since the start while they're in perfect conditions? Does the cake at the top look right to you?:mushroom2:

Day 5 is very early and the substrate is looking alright. Give it more time.

I personally would skip the fanning and poke a lot of holes in that bag and only mist as needed instead.

Hello!

Can you upload more higher resolution pictures? It's really hard to see what the surface looks like in those you already uploaded.

Since you are using a plastic bag over your kit, there's no point in increasing the humidity in the whole room. It doesn't hurt, but I don't think it is necessary.

Thanks for the response :sun:. It's day 8 now & nothing changed so far but staying patient. Would you keep the box in the dark until the Mycelium has spread all over the surface? The box is advertised as fully colonised & does look that way from sides & bottom - other than the surface though - so I do wonder if this would count as 100% colonised. Also wondering if the surface possibly doesn't need to be fully covered with Mycelium, if the mushrooms can grow & push up through the top layer - in that case I would need to introduce fruiting conditions + keep in light? I also still have the lid so could technically put that back on until the Mycelium has spread, if you think that helps? So much conflicting info out there, hard to know for certain :smirk:

From my limited experience I'd say that you should keep the lid off and that bag over it. Light is also beneficial to mycelium growth - especially blue light but they seem to grow just fine with any light source. Just make sure the surface is moist enough.

You should check PGT's videos on surface conditions. Those explain a lot

Thanks for your input & advice, Captain . Yes, I did my research about the light & got one days ago already but since the Mycelium wasn't growing at the surface, I thought it ways not fully colonised yet and needed to be in the dark. Anyway after seeing no changes day in & out, I decided to mist the surface for the first time - instead of just the walls of the bag as advised by the kit - (though from far up & very light, small drops). The next day I woke up with what I hope are tiny primordia. Now the rest of the surface still did not change Mycelium wise but I hope that wherever there is some of it, shroomies will grow & the rest of the surface somehow still develops for another flush. :mushroom2:
