Rookie drying mistake
    #28177032 - 02/08/23 01:15 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Hi All,

So as with any first time endeavour there has been a lot of trial and error. I got a good first flush but it came a lot faster than I was expecting and I was completely unprepared to harvest. As a result the early ones splooged their spores over everything and appear to have aborted the many little pins that were still growing. I decided to pick all the fruited mushrooms and try and dry them. I bought some Epsom salts and cooked them. I then placed the shrooms on a paper towel on top of the epsom salts to dry. To accelerate the process I thought I'd place the whole box in the sun today. I came back to this:

Have I completely destroyed them or is this what dried shrooms look like. They aren't "cracker" dry, they're still bendy. The caps still seem a little wet. Has anyone got any dried shroom pics?

Thanks,

G

Spores can make them black, but you definitely want them cracker dry for long term storage. I cannot tell from the picture if these are okay.

So the stems are supposed to look that thin?

Your mushrooms were thin to start with but you definitely chose a less than ideal drying situation.
Drying them in the sun will greatly reduce the actives.

The best way to dry mushrooms is using a dehydrator. After playing around with the temp, these days I prefer to dry them at 40c. They dry within 24 hours, less if your fruits aren't huge. Some people like to dry at a higher temp, lowering the drying time significantly - though I've had dark results similar to your photos, so I prefer drying at lower temps. Getting them cracker dry is important, as moisture is the main source of degradation (with light being a runner up) as far as I've understood. If you dont have a dehydrator, some ovens go as low as 40c, using the fan option and keeping the door slightly open works ok in my experience from the time my flushes exceeded the real estate I had available on my dehydration trays. You can also fan dry on a rack (in the dark or at least away from direct light). I've read interesting, although opposing opinions on freeze drying as well.

160F for 24hrs, vacuum sealed or jars with desiccant

your fruits are ok to eat but dont do that again

You have been on the shroomery for 9 months, why didn't you use the search function?

You’ve been on shroomery for over 7 years, yet this reply is less than helpful. Why bother replying if that’s all you had to contribute. I haven’t spent the last 9 months continuously trawling the forum.

You know you have access to a library of mushroom information, yet you still chose to wing it. I had to ask why.

Also, I lurked for 10 years reading everything before I made an account. Cuz I don't like fucking up.

Seriously there’s a ton of info on harvesting and drying. The search function is your best friend when you have a question. We’re here to help, it’s just people get tired of seeing the same post over and over again or things that could have been avoided with a simple search. Here ya go, good luck.

Just to circle back to the original question, those look fine. They were smallish fruits and you let the caps open, flatten, and drop spores before picking. Dried fruit can vary widely in appearance.

However, the way fruits look is largely irrelevant. It's their consistency and chain of custody that really matter. One's objective should be to dry them down completely as quickly as possible. If I can't turn a pile of fruit into dust by rubbing it between my fingers, then it's not done yet.

Because someone else will trawl the forum, and see that comment, and maybe, just maybe, utfse.

You do realize that if we weren't out here "continuously trawling the forum," then nobody would have answered your question, right?

Regardless, getting this question sorted out would be like a 20 minute reading project tops. Using the search function is not the same as "trawling the forum."

Entitlement is a bad look round these parts.

I also take a little piece of paper towel and wipe the spores off the tops before drying on a screen under a little personal heater/fan in a dark cabinet with ventilation  then throw in  container with many holes inside of a larger container that has drier rite in the bottom to finish  drying for a couple days

I think it's because you've "crossed the finish line," and, like bacterial spawn, you don't really know what poorly dried fruits are until you see properly dried ones.

It took me a decade to realize that stomach problems aren't part and parcel of the experience, and were mostly just from eating senesced fruit out of a ziplock bag. Lots of people aren't there yet.

I appreciate what you are saying and appreciate how incredibly helpful the shroomery community and have been. Surely though someone shouldn’t have to justify why they might ask a question about their specific situation, especially when new to growing on a forum about cultivation. If there is a better place for these queries please let me know. Often the results to similar queries are individual and not specific to your situation. In this case I did not have access to or time to purchase a dehydrator. It is clear now that that’s the only really practical way forward.

I appreciate that no one might have answered the question but I’m grateful that you have. I only ever post in the hope that I’ll receive an answer from kindly, experienced mycologists such as yourselves. However if not I’d go back and do the necessary searching and reading when I had the time available to do so. I just don’t understand how the post from LadysKnight was helpful is all.

G
