Land of the once free

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/06/21/crime.streaker.reut/index.html

HOUSTON, Texas (Reuters) -- A Texas jury on Monday found a British streaker guilty of criminal trespassing for racing onto the field during the Super Bowl in February with only a thong and a smile.

Mark Roberts, 39, could face up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine for the misdemeanor crime when the jury of six women considers his sentence on Tuesday.

Roberts danced an Irish jig at midfield at Reliant Stadium before New England Patriots linebacker Matt Chatham knocked him off his feet and police carried him away.

A veteran streaker who has strutted his stuff at hundreds of events around the world, Roberts said he was disappointed by the verdict.

"If making people laugh is a criminal offense, then they should send me to prison for life," he told reporters.

Roberts said he has been arrested many times but never convicted of a crime in connection with streaking.

Defense attorney Sharon Levine told the jury that Roberts did not trespass because there were no signs posted in the stadium telling people to stay off the field.

But prosecutor Kristin Guiney argued that Roberts' antics could not be tolerated in post-September 11 America.

"As light-hearted about this as I'd like to be, we don't live in a society anymore where we can excuse this kind of behavior," she told the jury.

Roberts has admitted to passing through the supposedly tight Super Bowl security wearing a phony referee's uniform, then ripping it off and stepping onto the field just before the start of the second half.

An online casino ad was painted on his skin.

Seems to me that the terrorists have already won... can "not be tolerated in post-September 11 America."... or is that just an excuse for over zealous police state enforcers?

This is sad, I'm sick and tired of this idea that somehow our lives have to change because of 911. They keep telling us to live no different but come on, this is some funny shit. They had this guy at a local radio station and he was quite funny. If anything he should be fined for trespassing and let go. He knows going into an event that he's going to get arrested, so just arrest hem, give him the fine and laugh as he struts out. I don't know about you but I laughed when he came out. Maybe this is the WMD that Bush is looking for.

She's right, we live in an over policed, Christian government society and we frown upon nudity. We want out children to grow up ashamed of their sexuality and body. We discriminate against the homosexuals in our very own constitution and we're constant struggle to take away reproductive rights from our woman. Yet, we promote unwanted pregnancies and unwanted births because we do not educate our youth on birth control. And we still have ourselves convinced that the abstinence lesson we've been teaching in sex ed since the 1950ties is still doing its jobs. And its still illegal to say vagina on the radio.
yes, that is the kind of society we live in now. God bless America.

It would be interesting to see the transcript of the prosecutor's remarks to know if she mentioned September 11 or if it was a gratuitous observation inserted by the author of the article. Certainly her quote says nothing about September 11.

Terrorism and 9/11 my ass. These attention seeking jerk-offs need to stay off the field. They needed to stay off the field before 2001 and they need to stay off the field now. End of discussion. I am not interested in seeing your pathetic ass running around and holding up the event. You want to show your ass, set up your own event. Otherwise go to jail. The increased intolerance for this kind of shit stems from the time in Chicago when a father and son leapt out of the stands and attacked an umpire. They weren't even pissed about a particular call he had made, they just wanted to be dicks on TV. Fuck that.

Yet another example...

Quote:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate approved on Tuesday measures to substantially raise fines for airing indecent material on broadcast television and radio, and invalidate media ownership rules that were eased last year.

The measures were attached to the $447 billion bill authorizing defense programs which is expected to pass this year. Fines would be raised to $275,000 per incident up to a maximum of $3 million per day.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed different language so the legislation will have to be worked out before it can be presented for President Bush (news - web sites) to sign or veto.

... a $3,000,000 (three million dollars!) fine per day seems to be a bit excessive for simply offending somebody else with what you say. Hell, half the f%^#cks in congress offend me with what they say every day... why can't I fine them?

How can you have a name like Zappa is god and think it's fair to throw this guy in jail for 6 months?

Frank Zappa fought the government against what they thought was indecency.

He wasn't thrown in jail for indecency. Frank Zappa stood for personal rights. 80,000 peoples lives were interrupted for this jack ass. Fuck him, I, and everybody else there, paid to see the game, not his hairy ass, or to have the game delayed because of him. He INFLICTED his moronity on my life, on something I paid money to see. This might legally be construed as a "taking." Not only that but the bag of garbage had an ADVERTISEMENT on his flesh. I wonder what this champion of free speech was paid for that!!!!! Very early Zappa song, Nullis Pretii(no COMMERCIAL potential, Accent mine). If my art is to take a dump on your carpet, and someone pays me to do it, is that OK with you? Stay off the fucking field!!!

Aside from that, people have got to stay off the field, for the umpire beating reason I mentioned before. Frankly, if someone rushes the field and a player accidentally kills him with a body shot, how will you feel then? Or if somebody rushes the field and deliberatley kills a player or ump or ref, how will you feel then? Stay off the field, you have NO rights there. Don't be stupid. Zappa brooked no drug use in his band at all. How's that for freedom of expression?

Also one should point out that America is not living up to it's designation as the "Home of the brave" either.
