No. I’m using off the shelf testing. I don’t have access to a full lab.

Hello friends,

I’ve spent the last two days’ free time reading this thread from the beginning, and the history is fascinating. I’m receiving two varieties of Ps. Natalensis this week from Yoshi, and I wanted to confirm what the current parameters are for successful spawn and fruiting runs.

I’m into the 100s of the thread, and up to that point the convention is to use tomentose mycelium to avoid overlay issues, and to use a substrate based on hpoo/verm/coir, and to keep the spawn/sub ratio low like 1:3 to 1:6. It seems like casing layer doesn’t really impact results.

Can anyone offer any advice or tips on navigating both the regular Natalensis and the NSS varieties?

Thank you!

Peace & Light,

Seeker604

I’m not sure there is a real distinction between nss and Natalensis as strains per se. That said, my success with nats has been to take a wispy agar plate to grain, then expand it doing G2G. Put it in shoeboxes using Dino soil (I get a lot of flak for using pre-prepped substrate, but I’ve also got only so much time to spare and hate this part) and spawn it 1:1 in a shoebox with a 0.5qt pseudo casing layer.

I’ve grown 70 shoeboxes and get between 1.5 and 2 oz dried per myco quart of spawn and the latest batch was tested above 21mg/g of psilocybin and above 24mg/g.

I grow it in temps between 60-65 degrees F and a not humid environment.

I never mist or mess with airflow. Just spawn and leave them until harvest. I typically get 3 flushes before I toss them.

I never get overlay.

All from a single drop of a MSS.

Yoshi’s site sells three Psilocybe Natalensis varieties to date:  Natalensis Super Strain (caps stain green), regular Natalensis, and Natalensis Low Spore. All three exhibit different phenotypes but are all Ps. Natalensis. The early runs by AKA and Crackatoa had results that match NSS with the green staining.

I don't have any fruit in hand yet, but from the small work I have done so far, I can concur somewhat on silky myc being better in the tub, much less puffy overlay from those

silky low profile myc

puffy tomentose looks like cube myc

it's hard to even see how bad that overlay on Nat A is in a photo, it's almost as thick as the substrate itself, about two inches below all that is the surface somewhere. That was plain coir, I will try some more with manure to see if anything special happens. I guess cultural selection is important with these if you want great results  hoping it will still fruit some though, I see from this thread they usually fruit right through that mess. Look forward to trying some eh

Will report back one way or the other

This comes up a lot and I just want to clarify that tomentose vs rhizomorphic has absolutely nothing to do whether your culture will overlay or not

I've never had overlay and have always used only heavily rhizomorphic and aggressive growth

I nocced up 4 more jars, these were WBR. I'm trying for edible mycelium with these. Will try them at different months to see if the strength increases. Will also try to make 2 shoeboxes with WBR as the sub, get a few flushes of fruits and then try the sub to see how it compares.

You have the same cultre as I do (you got the other half of the print  ) And I can say, it makes beautiful fruits. Also made a clone, so if yours have problems, I can send you a slant later if you want ;-)

:hatsoff:

Thanks brother, hopefully it won't come to that... Sure she will do her thing, it hasn't been that long yet that I am really concerned, just never seen something get so stupid like that. The puffy stupid one really looks a lot like the one you grew also, even down to how it sees to prefer to overlay round the edges the most

I have to check my notes as well, if the plate gives no clue as to the outcome then perhaps I did something different with ratio or compression on that tub

With all due respect, if you take the time to read this thread from the beginning, you will see the overlay issues they encountered and that using tomentose led to fewer issues with overlay.

What spawn to sub ratio are you using for aggressive rhizo grows?

You can run your cultures on small pf Pucks to see what they will do before jumping to grain

You may not know but Guerrilla has grown Natalensis a lot.

We have different Natalensis, I never get overlay and have a rhizo cultures.

I hate your postservice xD But still hoping  Got an other Nat culture from Egon aswell, which I am growing now in my LAGM. Courious if that one is also so overlayed. But the ones I grew now, hat beautiful small sized caps and really heavy bodys. Actually one of the most beautiful shrooms I've grown for a while, just the looks of it are like amazing
Can't wait to try them in Autmn ^^

the green cap is environment-related  and not a genetic trait as in a phenotype. i see it as related to humidity levels.
that's my opinion and experience anyway
