Is this tub matting
    #28172311 - 02/04/23 04:59 PM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Hi,
Still trying to figure out how to do this. I think my tub is matting and I'm assuming I won't get pins. But can someone help to clarify for me if this is a matted tub?

Thanks,
-D

I had a few matted tubs this month but that one doesn't look too bad. milkboy do you know? Like what are the early signs and how long is too long... If i don't get pins after 24 days its trash ususally. there's likely a random write-up somewhere in the forums.

And agreed LITFA

My assumption given the little to no information, and baised on pictures provided is that fellow over here has been misting alot.

To answer the original question no it doesn't look "matted"

Hard to say others may know better. But ive had slow growers sit in tubs fully colonized for 3 weeks before pins...

Sorry for just adding pictures. I'll add some color.

So This tub is going on its 4th week after mixing fully healthy PE colonized rye berries. The PE is from a tissue sample I took from another tub I grew.

This tub didn't do much for a week. I took off to Vegas for a week came back and it was basically fully colonized with some little patches of substrate at the top that was still not taken over, as well as the bottom of the tub.

The temp has been a consistent 72 degrees, with the exception of last week where I lowered the temp to 70. The horse manure I used didn't seem perfectly field capacity (I would squeeze it really hard and just a little moisture would come through my hands).

What was weird to me was that I was waiting for it to fully colonize the bottom and on further inspection this morning noted there was pooling water at the bottom. I also noted that the substrate had pulled away from the tub (probably no biggy I didn't use a liner). So this morning I drilled a hole in the bottom of the tub to release the water. I was just surprised that there was so much water as I had thought the field capacity was low and I HAVE NOT BEEN MISTING THIS TUB AT ALL. Also was surprised by the size of the water beads on top of the mycelium.

I've always kept this tub basically in fruiting conditions(low 70's) with 10 micropose filters rather than plugging it (trying to get decent FAE) since mixing the substrate with the grain spawn.

Also there is 6 pounds of spawn in this tub with 12 pounds of composted horse manure, organic coconut coir, vermiculite, and gypsum.

I do apologize for not adding more info initially. I am a super newb. I'm just really trying to figure this out. Not sure if this changes any of the thinking here.

Cheers,
D

I've had excess pooling that led to bacterial bloom before. Nothing new there with unmodded shoes and tubs. sometimes you have to wipe the condensation off the underside of the lid esp if your field capacity or dials are off kilter. Look at this tub that got fucked that way.

Also, if youre using composted horse manure wouldn't that create excess heat? I honestly don't know?
I would say you should introduce  little more FAE and see what happens but it sounds like you already did that..Introduce those fruiting conditions immediately. There should be beads of moisture pooled but not in excess like that. It will tell you what it needs.
