My IR scalpel steriliser ("Bacticinerator") from AliExpress arrived! Works super well so far, much safer and more convenient than using a torch in this context. ~£120 after postage, took about a week to arrive.
We'll see if it burns out in a year as I half expect. Still, the usual academic/industrial lab suppliers quote something like £400 for an (apparently) equivalent model and I don't have an infinite conga line of undergrads waiting to use it every day.

Edit: Forgot to mention! It takes about 10 minutes to get to 800c but that's plenty of time to begin firing up the flow hood, get my PPE on and label my media.
Edit; failed twice in six months.

That looks fairly decent for what you paid. May have to invest!

Excuse the double post, I have a question.
When you purchase from the US on eBay, and you pay import charges in the same transaction, does this mean no further fees are applied when it lands in the UK? No duty tax or surprise charges?

If it's shipped with the Global Shipping Program there's no addition charges ime.

I didn’t get any nasty extras when I got both of my pressure cookers so I’d go with no from personal experience.

I've just realised that I forgot to order RTV sealant to attach synthetic filter discs to some jars.
Will Loctite 5990 Premium Silicone Copper Gasket Maker/Sealant from Halfords do (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/tools/garage-equipment/head-gasket-and-exhaust-repairs/loctite-5990-premium-silicone-copper-gasket-maker%2Fsealant-599712.html?stockInventory=undefined) or do I need to get a particular type / brand?
(I can get J-B Weld 31314 High Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker and Sealant - Red - 3 oz.delivered tomorrow by Amazon, but I've got this afternoon free & I'm itching to play!
Thanks

Worth knowing keeno, but Halfords is <5 minutes away. I'm back with the sealant, but got some SAB work to do before I get the drill out

Sorry - yet another question.
Is a stir plate worth having for a dabble in LC, or does swirling it do the job? If it's worth getting one, do any of you have links to a recommended type (I gather I need a low speed of 100rpm max and a lot on Amazon seem to advertise top speeds of 1000+ without a low speed)?
I looked on betterequipped.co.uk, but the cheapest is £150 which seems an awful lot for a motor & a couple of magnets. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate!
Thanks again all.

I have a cheap Chinese stir plate that was about £25. It works fine. Get something nice if you're buying a hot plate for chemistry, you do get what you pay for with those but stir plates are indeed dead simple. Educational suppliers supply for the budget of educational institutions

Yeah I’m with Phenyl, had mine for about 18 months and can’t fault it. Cost me £20 at the time but they’re now £26. Just takes power via a little micro USB. Convenient to run it anywhere.

Hello UK gang.
I would usually get my coco coir bricks from Pets At Home but they seem to have stopped selling them for now. I've checked all local stores.
Am looking online & see the following...
londongrow.com £1.45/10L brick: https://www.londongrow.com/products/substra-coco-brick?variant=31892247183444
Swell Reptiles 650g bricks £2.17 each: https://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/swell-premium-coco-bricks?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgPvs3ern_AIVBe_tCh3gSwL3EAQYBCABEgISvfD_BwE#coco-soil-brick-650g
Going to order a bulk so if anyone advises against either of the above then please give me a nudge!
Thanks : )

Buy a presto on ebay from the USA using their global shipping, you pay all the import taxes etc on ebay and it just gets delivered to your house. Mine took a week to arrive.
If you grab an induction one and then you can buy a small single induction plug in hob for it too.
Works a charm.
