how long should straw soak?
    #2816813 - 06/22/04 12:47 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

it says in moes tek the hay should soak for 24 hours, but is this really necessary? why? it seems like after a few hours of soaking they are really saturated with water

go with the 24 hours, it takes a while for water to pass through the cell walls in dried straw... you could also try simmering it for about 3 hours but it's more labor intensive...

this is far from my first grow ;-) the straw is gonna be used for an outdoor grow, so im assuming the endospores dont need to germinate?

soak for a good 3 hours. Simply to get the moisture in the straw.

if you intend to water pastuerize I really dont think a pre-soak is really all that important I have never done that and never have had a failure I have done 20 or so runs with oysters and all has gone well with them
cubes? well that would be ilegal would not even think about it

yes a presoak is important imo...and if you've done both you can feel the difference in the straw

I soak for 12-24hours with lime already added to the water...then right before pasteurization I add a very small amount of bleach for good measure...

don't even use a thermometer anymore cause its not needed...I heat the water up till its steaming pretty good then stabalize the heat too keep it steamin for around 1 hour and 15mins...then I let it drain for 4-6hours

this allows for maximum water absorbtion without having any excess puddles...IMO of course

>To germinate endospores.

It is to soak the straw, not to germinate endospores. Moe's tek is an outdoor, low maintenance tek.

24 hours might be a bit long, but straw does need quite some time to properly soak.
If you are using hay(which might not be as good as straw) then it will take less time, since hay is much thinner.
