PHILADELPHIA DAILY MEWS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29. 1967

3 Agents Raid complete Lab For Making LSD; 4 Arrested

It was, said police, almost as well equipped as a college chemistry lab.
There were scales, test tubes and vials. And there were such exotics, they said, as the ingredients for making lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and dimethyltryptamine (DMT).
And, in the "complete laboratory" for making psychedelic goodies, police say they found a half pound of marijuana in brick form.
The whole setup was in an apartment on Pine st. near 9th — until yesterday afternoon, that is.
FOR IT WAS THEN that local police and Federal narcotics agents raided the place and arrested three college students and a student nurse.
Charged with violation of the State's dangerous drug laws and possession of marijuana were:
Barry Arkles, It a chemistry major at Temple University who lives in the apartment; his wife, Linda Jean, 19, a Penn State student at the school's Ogontz campus; Thomas A. Dibble. 19, of Chadds Ford, Chester county, also a Temple student, and Margaret Mary Sansom, 18, a student nurse at Chester County Hospital, West Chester.
Arkles was held in $25,000 bail at an arraignment last night be-fore Magistrate Ralph W Dennis. Mrs. Arkles, Dibble and Miss Sansom were held in $1000 bail. All will be given hearings on Dec. 7.
DANIEL J. ADDARIO, chief of the Philadelphia office of the U.S. Bureau of Drug Abuse Control, said the arrests followed a year-long investigation.
Addario said Arkles had lived at the Pine st. address for three months, had prepared formulas for the manufacture of drugs and had mailed them to selected college students in the North-eastern U.S. Arkles also sold the ingredients, Addario said.
The equipment and supplies in the apartment were valued at "several thousand dollars," according to Addario.

  • 1962:  Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is published

Quote:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962) is a novel written by Ken Kesey. Set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital, the narrative serves as a study of the institutional processes and the human mind as well as a critique of behaviorism and a celebration of humanistic principles. It was adapted into the Broadway play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Dale Wasserman in 1963. Bo Goldman adapted the novel into a 1975 film directed by Miloš Forman, which won five Academy Awards.

Time Magazine included the novel in its "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005" list.

Fifty years ago — on Feb. 1, 1962 — a first novel appeared that would make its author a literary celebrity, inspire a movie that won the Best Picture Oscar, and help change the way we think about mental health institutions.

  • 1967:  Jefferson Airplane release the album Surrealistic Pillow

Quote:

Surrealistic Pillow is the second album by American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in February 1967.

Original drummer Alexander 'Skip' Spence had left the band in mid-1966, replaced by a jazz drummer from Los Angeles, Spencer Dryden. New lead vocalist Grace Slick joined the band in 1966. Both Slick and Dryden debuted with the band on records with this album and its attendant singles, thus completing the best-known line-up of the group, which would remain stable until Dryden's departure in 1970. It is also considered to be one of the quintessential albums of the 1960s counterculture movement.

Album overview

Jefferson Airplane's fusion of folk rock and psychedelia was original at the time, in line with musical developments pioneered by The Byrds, The Mamas & the Papas, and Bob Dylan. Surrealistic Pillow was the first blockbuster psychedelic album by a band from San Francisco, announcing to the world the active bohemian scene that had developed there starting with The Beats during the 1950s, extending and changing through the 1960s into the Haight-Ashbury counterculture. Subsequently, the exposure generated by the Airplane and others wrought great changes to that counterculture, and by 1968 the ensuing national media attention had precipitated a very different San Francisco scene than had existed in 1966. San Francisco photographer Herb Greene photographed the band for the album's cover art.

Some controversy exists as to the role of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia in the making of the album. His reputed presence on several tracks is denied by producer Rick Jarrard, but he is credited on the RCA label copy, as well as receiving credits on the Flight Log compilation and the Jefferson Airplane Loves You box set.

Surrealistic Pillow was originally released as RCA Victor LPM/LSP 3766, and peaked at #3 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, driven by "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," which peaked at #8 and #5 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album was mixed in both mono and stereo, and both mixes are available on a rare RCA Gold CD edition, a November 2001 reissue, and as part of the Ignition box set. The mono version is actually preferred by some collectors as it has a more powerful sound and significantly less echo and reverb than the stereo mix. Another stereo reissue appeared on August 19, 2003, with seven bonus tracks, including the mono A-sides of "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit." The 2003 reissue was produced by Bob Irwin.

The United Kingdom version of the LP is a mish-mash of the United States version and their first LP, "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off".

In 2003, the album was ranked number 146 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

  • 1969:  The Doors release the single for "Wishful Sinful"

Quote:

"Wishful Sinful" is a song written by Doors guitarist Robby Krieger and performed by The Doors. Released in March 1969 from the band's fourth album, The Soft Parade, "Wishful Sinful" follows the general theme of the album by incorporating elements of classical music. It reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969.

Though many of the songs on The Soft Parade (including Wishful Sinful) were somewhat unpopular[citation needed] - at least amongst fans of the harder, bluesier Doors sound - at the time of the original release, many music fans today find the album to be a skillful expansion of the Doors' musical abilities.

The song was covered by pianist George Winston on his album Night Divides the Day - The Music of the Doors.

"Wishful Sinful" has often been featured in the cover version sequence of live sets by Kevin Hewick.

B-Side

The B-side of the single - "Who Scared You?" - is one of only three non-album B-sides that the Doors released during their career. The other two are "(You Need Meat) Don't Go No Further" and "Tree Trunk".

This was the 45th anniversary of Surrealistic Pillow.  I wish I could have spent it sitting in a field of grass with a CD player playing it.  Maybe on the 50th.

45th anniversary of "Wishful Sinful".  I love this song.  It makes me think of standing under a waterfall on psychedelics in the embrace of a beautiful woman.  Very groovy.
