Pentagon and Guantanamo Bay
    #2814762 - 06/21/04 05:13 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

The Pentagon claims that no Geneva Convention violations took place at Gitmo though Rumsfeld had approved "water-boarding" for one prisoner. "That is not torture, hell, people pay every day to go to water parks," Rummy explained. "Besides," he claimed, "terrorists are not protected by the Geneva convention."

The Pentagon refused to make public the internal memos saying, "Trust us. We have nothing to hide. Any patriotic American will take us at our word."

While true, we shouldn't be torturing anyone except in the most EXTREME cases.

Oh, and liberals.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. The attorneys for the soldiers being court-martialed for Abu Graib abuses (do NOT use the word torture - only our enemies torture) indicate that approval came from the top.

Rumsfeld is such a pussy. He cannot even firmly stand behind his own ideals. He now states that he gave approval for "water boarding" (dunking prisoners and making them think they will be drowned), but did not give FINAL approval. BFD! Yes, this is not about morals and ethics, but about semantics. That is what the USA stands for.

if he stood behind his ideals he would be torn town. he must hide to accomplish his goals.

'Yes, this is not about morals and ethics, but about semantics. That is what the USA stands for.' (Swami)

If you use a (mental) thesaurus the semantics pretty quickly blend into meaning, morals and ethics become clear.

No matter which word you signify with, the signified stays the same.

Hey lets get down the water park and have some fun 'waterboarding'!!

Woooo-hooo!

True.

As Robert Ringer poignantly pointed out in his '70s classic book "Looking Out For #1", (paraphrased) no one perceives themselves as being wrong, and if they do, they merely redraw their personal definition line of morality.

One of the attorneys for the soldiers claims that orders came from above so it's not their fault, they were just following orders. Does anyone remember Lt Calley? Number 1, do you instantly accept as gospel the statements of their attorneys? And OJ didn't do it. Come on, are you fucking serious? And, Number 2, how come no other guard crews got these orders? It is a very large prison, with many crews. If these were orders from above, how come we haven't heard about any other than this small group? You can assert that there are some nebulous rumors that the abuse was more widespread but the press is all over this. Don't you think they would have found something by now? And please, worse shit happens in prison everyday. What a bunch of crybabies.

As an aside, the NY Times recently had a headline that called the My Lai massacre "abuse." This was a disgraceful attempt to equate the shit that happened at Abu Graib with wholesale murder of a whole village. Get a fucking grip.
