adding nutrients to the dunking water
    #1695003 -

are there any nutrients that can be added to the dunking water to fortify the cakes after birth and replenish them after each flush?

Some people do honey water, some people do poop water I think?

Do a search for honey dunking or somesuch...

Actually I just looked it up, read this... I wouldn't do it, read Anno's post....

The main food source of the mycelium is the PF cake. I can imagine dunking in water with added nutrients might increase the amount of nutrients available to the mycelium, but I also think this effect would be only marginal. I'd stick with dunking in plain water. No need to risk contaminants and such by inducing more factors to the growing process than necessary.

The main nutrients responsible for mushroom body growth is nitrogen and carbon. Specifically amino based nitrogen which also has a high amount of carbon as well.amino acids, specifically L-tryptophan are responsible for the biosynthesis of psilocybin.
Down To earth has a Soy Protein Hydrolysate fertilizer that could be added to the dunk, it has a low application rate of 1-2 tsp per gallon. There are other companies that make a better product if you start looking around the web.
But if you want big yields of high quality mushrooms you NEED nitrogen supplimentation.
Composted steer manure is cheap and the best amendment to bulk substrate.
The other addition i reccomend is adding glucosamine. The fruit body is made of chitin, which is produced by the conversion of glucosamine.
Calcium will create shorter stipes and increase percociousness but it has been found that there is also a decrease in yield when too much calcium (gypsum) is added.

Just don’t. Any nutrient substrate needs to be sterilized, and kept sterile until fully colonized by mushroom mycelium before exposing it to possible contamination in open air. BRF pucks are sterilized, kept in the jar under a dry verm layer; grain is sterilized and kept in the jar with a filtered lid. Once fully colonized these are somewhat resistant to contamination. If you dunk in nutrient you’ve just undone all your hard work. They will contaminate. Besides, all the nutrient the mush needs is in the cake. BRF pucks are a low yield/high chance of success method of growing. If you want to increase yield you can crumble cakes to coir in a shoebox, or start making grain spawn and using monos.
