Wild Louisiana Cubensis taming
    #28158157 - 01/26/23 10:55 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

As the post here says, I'm interested in taming some wild cubensis from said area. My family, wont say where in louisiana they live, but we have always been cattle herders. My father keeps 120 head on a piece of land that is 75 acres, and growing up I would see fields and fields of these beautiful golden colored mushrooms growing everywhere...

One time, before I even started learning on here... I went out with a dollar general shopping bag, and filled the bag up all the way full... pounds and pounds.... and I hadn't even done a quarter of the grazing area.... they were HUGE... and prolific.

It is from these fruits that I had my first tripping experiences, and I'll never forget how much they made me and my friends LAUGH!... during tripping, we would all laugh so hard that when we would burst into a fit of laughter about something, no sound would come out. Just wide open mouths, squinted eyes in laugter and tears coming out of our eyes... they were some of my best experiences...

so enough with the story, heres the meat of my post:

I Am interested in taming this specific fruit that grows on our land... they are huge, sometimes the caps are about 6 inches wide, and they are prolific.. I feel like trying to tame these would not only be a very good learning process and help me learn more about isolation and agar and sterile technique, but due to the prolific nature of these on our land, I would also be interested in allowing others to try and benefit from these. They are quite unique. So, in a couple of months when they begin to pop up in their plentiful glory, And when I'm able to join the trade forum, I Would be interested in sending prints to anyone available to try and help me tame this wonderful fruit!

Having said that, I was wondering... where should I begin in the taming process? I have read some anecdotes about creating little tin foil collars for them, before they open to help catch fresh spores, and I have read that you dont really need bother with that, that you can just tame it with agar culture transfers......

And I guess my biggest question is, does anyone here have experience taming a wild specimen? about how long is the process? how difficult?

Just wanted to share this, and see what you guys think about the process of cultivating a wild specimen, and also to say that I am interested in spreading the love with prints. They usually begin to pop up at the end of february, so it's not long off.

Does anyone have any really good links to taming a wild specimen, and also agar culture recipes? I've done a lot of reading on the topic, but there seems to be a lot of variance and personal preferences. I'm thinking, right now, Agar agar, LMEA and something nutritive.

I can't wait to share this thing and talk with others about their results with it. So far nothing I have grown has had the specific qualities or effects of these wonderful things.

Hope this isn't in the wrong forum, but it is about cultivation, and I guess I'm just seeking reccomendations on the best method for agar cleaning and isolation of a wild species. or any little tips that might help me.

And to let you guys know when i hit my 90 days, I will keep a store of these prints and share the love for anyone wanting to join me in taming this specific beauty.

When I do, Plan on creating a log here, and letting others share their progress with it... I think it would be fun! and I would love to see others work with these because they hold such a wonderful place in my heart.

These are from a wild print, from the same field as my sig pic. Print>agar>clone>print, repeat, while looking for speed, potency, and canopies is my plan.

I'm part coonass too, from CenLa.

I would do a clone if I were you.  I like this thread.  I'm very interested in wild specimens, and I envy those of you who live where cubensis grows.  Yes, do a grow log, I wanna see this.  If you do end up making some prints I would be down to trade.

people clone and print wild mushrooms of all kinds all the time but I'm pretty the people here will be very interested in getting their hands on the monsters you are describing

I'm from Cenla too! Laisez les bontemps roulez, mon cha!

So you have already done some work on this, I wonder if it's the exact same strain? I  mean i know things can vary by area, or even the way that cattle is fed : Our cattle are organic fed cattle.

And yes I will GLADLY share the love, i mean literaly i could make prints till my eyes fall out, due to the nature of their prolific abundance.

I'm so excited to do this, and make a log and get some people in on it

Glad to meet another coon-ass btw!

and on looking at those, I would say they look similar! So it may be the same strain... have you noticed the massive size these can get, and their effects of creating elation and laughter?

I've had some that were so large that when you come upon them, they have broken their own stems due to the weight of the fruiting top. its crazy.

There were times when I had bruised ribs from laughing so hard... and I never got that effect with any of the others i have yet tried. sorry to keep posting, i should have put all this in one post but i'm excited about it! These are my favorite and I would love to tame them.

These are from Florida, I still visit La several times a year. The large one in my sig, was 4-5". We don't have cattle in our pasture in La, we've got horses and donkeys, haven't seen any cubes, but lots of pans.

Yea, the ones im speaking of get even bigger than that in a lot of instances. It can be due to the strain.. the area.. or the fact that the cattle are organic cattle.. who knows.

When they start popping up, I will take pics, and make prints and create a log, and would love for anyone interested in doing like a group taming process, and posting together. I think it would be fun!

and actually when i said 6" on some of the larger ones that was a conservative guess.... probably larger sometimes.

Now that I think about it it's probably all of those factors combined with the fact that the area is 90% humidity and gets ample rain all year round.. it's probably an amalgamation of all these things. But I really do think that organic cattle has something to do with it...

Alot of the cattle herders feed their cattle purchased grain and that grain is sprayed with fungicides and other chemicals to keep it fresh longer.

Here’s a link to a little project I worked on for a few months last year, from a wild print gathered in coastal Texas.

Wild Texas Cubensis F1 in Cultivation

My goal with that particular few rounds of growth was not domestication of the wild species, but distribution of wild genes specifically to get at some variability. I put it down for a while to play with some other cultures, but will probably pick it back up with a new generation later this year.

When you describe domestication, it sounds like what you’d like to do is isolate some specific traits: size, color, strength, etc. to do this, you’ll need to work multiple generations from spore print grown out to spore, repeatedly, in an attempt to stabilize those traits until the consistently show up in every new generation. There’s a lot of variability in wild spores, so this could take a while, but it’s a fun undertaking.

As others have mentioned, you can make spore prints from wild caps, or you can take clone tissue from wild fruits. I think I mention in the thread above some of the troubles I experienced with cloning, and why I went back to spores. But your mileage may vary with your particular clone culture. Keep in mind there are a lot of environmental factors that affect growth and phenotype expression in cultivation, which my produce fruit indoors looking vastly different from those which you found outdoors.

Best of luck! Keep us updated.

That makes alot of sense. I know it may end up looking and behaving slightly different once tamed..

I have been reading up on my cloning literature, and agar literature... what I would like to do is capture the specific effect these have. the strength, and the tendency for creating elation and laughter.. and hopefully the aggressiveness of the strain. So it's going to be a lot of learning, and a lot of trial and error, that's what i thought it would be fun to do a log, and send others prints and have them join my log to see what we can come up with together

Can't wait till it warms up, it's almost time!

I'm gonna read through your log, Now that I live in texas I'm hoping to come across a wild variety here.

I still go home to cenla very frequently, especially during growing season lol... and the best part is my dad is like the coolest dad ever. He is the one who showed me how to identify them and taught me about them. He even calls me up at the end of feb or beginning of march and is like "They're everywhere! you need to come visit!"

I know of the elation to which you refer. I have always thought that microdosing our native cubes would be much more effective than the horror show big pharm feeds people in dealing with various types of depression. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at isolating a clean strain myself, though I am new to the cult of cultivation. I'm back home for the 1st time in 15yrs, (Pineville, 2 blocks from LC, Jack's and Harlow's) and things are much more developed than when I left, and all the old haunts are gone. Would love a print when you get to that point cuz even though season approaches and I am already here, I don't know where to anymore. 😭 Thanks!
