Requesting Feedback for First Grow

This is my first post. I appreciate the advice and information I've gotten here, but I'm hoping to get some direct feedback.
My friend is attempting his first grow. He started with scattered and contradictory information, and has probably done as much wrong as right.
An inflatable "BoomerShroomer" monotub with their "Dry Bulk Substrate" was inoculated with a colonized rye grain bag from SeismicSpore.
I think it might have been bit dry since my friend started out by following advice which said to "only mist the walls" - I don't know if that explains the greyishness. The humidity seems to be above 90%, but the hygrometer seems to be going beyond its limit and only reading 99%.
Another puzzle is the circular holes that formed in the mycelium. They're not easy to see here, but there's a large number of holes that look somewhat like a funnel-web spider's nest. I don't think water dripped directly onto the mycelium, so that's puzzling.
Anyway, we'd appreciate feedback for this first attempt. Does it appear to be on the right track?

Not very well, which is why he asked me to ask, I guess.
He found nothing that matched his holes, he found answers that he wasn't even sure were applicable, and the fact that he's color-blind might not be helping very much either. He suspects cobweb mold, but he's not sure.
He also ran into some frustration with basement-dwelling "forum alphas" who'd rather bump a thread with snark than provide anything helpful.
But, thanks for the response! I can tell your time is valuable.

When you say 'Dry Bulk Substrate,' do you mean as in already hydrated and with no need to further hydrate? If so, then look for tiny beads of water on the surface. There should be quite a few, though not little pools of water. If the tub has that and some fresh air exchange is happening, through a flipped lid, holes with filters or whatever, then there shouldn't really be anything further that needs to be done until at least the first harvest. Again, if all of this is happening, forget about misting the walls. That doesn't really help. The mushrooms don't grow on the walls and avoid misting at all if you can until around the first harvest, unless the surface is obviously really dry.

Sorry, that wasn't clear at all. He followed the seller's instructions and did a crude pasteurization with boiling water and a large bucket. It was quite wet by the time he mixed it with the spawn.
Thank you very much for your feedback and advice. I had myself convinced that this attempt was borked. I thought the black dots and grayer spots were signs of mold, and I was on the verge of dumping the tub.

Yeah, I seem to have let that go during my last post, anyway.
Thanks! I'm a lot more hopeful than I was a few hours ago. This is something I've thought about doing for decades.

The thing is that you're doing it, which is more than many will ever do. From what I can see so far, the mycelium looks pretty healthy. We learn by doing and asking questions. The other thing that helps is a little patience and trusting that the myc wants to grow and will tend to find the right way to do just that, so long as we don't overthink and complicate things, or try and 'help' when what we should be doing is just sitting back and letting the myc just do it's thing. Even when we do make mistakes, it's all part of the process. You got this so long as you keep asking questions and give things a chance to go at their own pace.

Thanks! I'm sure I'll have questions... I'm already pretty certain this won't be my last grow.
I spotted my first mushroom a little while ago. My excitement is almost embarrassing.

Just a follow-up:
They're popping up everywhere, and I have high hopes for my first flush right now.
Thanks again, everyone! I can't believe I was ready to dump it all a day before seeing my first mushroom.

That's more common than you might think. Now just leave it alone for 2-3 days until they're ready to pluck

Was it established that it wasn't his friend, but himself performing the grow?

Nope... I've got too many questions for that!
My next one is timing. Does this look like these John Allens are being pulled at the right time?
It's the first flush, so dropping spores would not be ideal.
Thanks again!

They're too young, what's wrong with a bit of a spore drop?

I've read that the spores cause the mycelium to slow down or stop fruiting.
Is that outdated, too?

Outdated and incorrect. Give the mushrooms another day, maybe even two, when they get to that stage and it's fine if a few open up and drop some spores. The loss of potency that apparently happens between before the veil breaks and afterwards is, as I understand it, not worth worrying about. This way also gives a chance for other fruits to mature a little, so that you're not constantly harvesting just a couple here and there (if you have a good amount growing).
