Installing Subs to a car
    #28099012 - 12/15/22 03:43 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

Yupp. You heard that right. I am trying to put subs onto my car (truck).

I am posting here in hopes that i can gain knowledge into the field of electrical components and wiring this damn thing together in my car(without paying thousands for someone else to do it).

Unfortunately i havnt been able to find any website like the shroomery, except for car auido and sound systems. So i thought id post here.

Into the story.

I had subs installed to a car i had in highschool and took the out before i sold the car. Now ive been stuck with a sweet auido system and no idea of how to set this thing up.

Ive got a decent idea of what i need to do to hook this up in my truck. I am just stuck on a couple wiring connections.

Here is the amp and sub box. This part is simple i am connecting the subbox to the amp. I have to connect my amp RCA channels to this KEYLOC down below. I have a factory stereo so i cannot connect directly from my amp into the stereo so i am using this KEYLOC. I connect my amps to the RCA to the KEYLOC and I am working on wiring my KEYLOC to the stereo. This is the part which is stumping me right now.

The harness kit for my stereo is posted above along with my stereo. I know I need to connect my left and right, Positive and negative, speakers to my KEYLOC or LOC for short. What confuses me is that if i pull out the left and right speakers and plug them into my LOC. What wire will connect the controls from stereo to amp?

The KEYLOC is gray/gray white/white. Those are the left an righr speaker. The yellow is 12v. Blue is rem. Black is grounding. And red is accessory. I am stuck and cannot figure out the wiriing plan from there.

The rest seems pretry simple. I run my power line from car battery to amp. Connect my left and right subs to my amp. And ground my amp to the metal floor.

Not sure if anybody here is good with electrical components and even sound systems. But anything would be cool and appreciated.

Thanks.

It is a little difficult to follow exactly what you have done (perhaps a diagram would make it easier).

What wire will connect the controls from stereo to amp?

What "control" wire are you talking about? It's been nearly 30 years since I installed stereo equipment, but it is the speaker wires that "control" the amp. If you are basically using this device in-line, as in stereo>KEYLOC>Amp>Speaker, the RCA cables are sending the necessary signals to the amp.

If you are instead talking about the amp needing some additional low power signal to know when to turn on, then that should be the blue wire you labled REM (remote). The red "accessory" is likely remote-in and would be from the head unit.

This is a very specific high kniwledge question for a rather low end setup. You would be best to learn the specifics as you go and only ask 1 question at a time.

I installed systems before and this is a headeach to understand.

I recomend hook up the new head unit first, get it figured out.

Then add the amp-sub componets.

If you can find a random person that can guide you through those componets, you are lucky.

If only there was some type of sharing platform where experts could visually walk you through some type of tutorial on almost any topic?

Maybe far into the future, we’ll be able to watch a 5 minute video presentation on how to install crappy car audio components with animated diagrams.

Even if there were any of those videos, I’m sure they’re locked away and unavailable to the public, free this knowledge!!!

If only we could be so lucky.

Ehh.
Problem has been solved.

I just wasnt sure what would be sending audio control signals from my stereo to the LOC.

Like.... my whole sound system components were plugged in together, without a control wire to send music playing from the stereo into the actual speakers...

That is what was confusing me.

Wires are connected together yah. But like. How is the speaker going to sense stereo channel without a connection to it?

It wouldn't. So if it is playing, then obviously they are connected. Your terminology is still confusing. The way you are describing is inadequate. Refer back to my post and follow instructions if you want further clarification.

Check out CAF Car audio fabrication on YouTube. Mark has tons and tons of videos. using audio control device to convert the high lvl signal from a factory head unit to low level rca's. He actually has video on all aspects of car audio install.
