Winter Rose (Hellebores)

Is anyone familiar with these poinsettia/evergreen like flowering plants?
I hadn't heard of it when I accepted this potted specimen two years ago, from a now dearly departed neighbor. I'm in the north east, albeit our winter last year was mild-er. It was left in the pot, dug into the earth and cradled with a nest of evergreen limbs. It did great, and continued to do so through the growing season.
However, I grew concerned this winter and gradually brought it in with the rest of fragile plants and herbs. Horrible idea, the plant withered despite light watering, then deluge level soaks, and trying different levels of lighting. The thing is barely hanging on with one small green shoot, all large leaves have withered.
Have read articles, and really don't see where I went wrong other than I should of left it outside to winter.
Is anyone familiar with this, and have any advice on bringing it back to life? Will post pics only if nec.. I'm actually embarrassed by this travesty.

Sorry, no experience with bringing these back to life, but can only attest to them being fine if left out during winter. They're one of the few early flowering plants around here, so quite popular in gardens. My parents have had a couple for twenty years or so. I still have to plant one or two; only moved into this place last year, so we've yet to complete our first cycle.
I'm fond of the purple variety. It seems to be less common than the white and lime ones (and everything in-between).

Thanks for getting back. They really are lesser known (imo) spectaculars. This one had white flowers, agreed that the purple ones are most stunning.
I also have a money tree (Pachira aquatica) that has always flourished. In experience, pruning the large leaves leads to new and abundant growth. Contemplating attempting this method with the winter rose, as it seems to be doing this on its own. Every time I think it's toast, a new shoot pos up. The larger leaves are the ones withering.
Going to try to add some coir to the pot. Apparently it is not wise to fertilize at this time, but its soil is not of best quality.
Hope to update thie thread with success. And open to suggestions, if anyone has thoughts.

I don't know how it responds to pruning to be honest. I'd probably just leave it alone; they seem to do quite well with a healthy dose of neglect.
A money tree, that's one plant we don't have (yet). My girlfriend counted the other day the number of houseplants we have. Ended up being between 50 and 60 or so.
