I'm on my 5th grow, and only 2 "successful". The first one was wild spores to grain, went to work on the road, was gone for 8 weeks and came home to dried shriveled mushrooms in the jars. I've got 50ish plates right now in different stages of growth and 30ish jars inoculated that idk what imma do with if they become viable.
Also got a name drop!

-never did PF tek -didnt realize you need to put nutrients in agar, basically made agar only plates, which germinated spores successfully for the two 2 strains I tried: GT, APER -made sweet potato agar bcs I had one lying around and was too lazy to go buy potatoes. had a very low success rate, though myc did grow on a few plates -bought a huge bottle of red americolor heat resistant food coloring gel. has natural fungicide. -would wrap glass plates in foil, which was incredibly wasteful.. got a metal sterilization sleeve from aliexpress -would pc my glass plates (which left condensation), then bake them in the oven (mainly to get rid of the condensation, but ended up being wet, then dry sterilization lol) I only dry sterilize now. -have been making MS LC since my first run, then I choose some fruits, clone and make iso LC. (still do this - my bags are too big to fit in the arm holes of my sab) -bought 10 liters of denatured alcohol bcs it was cheaper, if it touches your skin and you lick it for some reason, it leaves a horrible and long lasting taste -messed up verm ratio fairly severely in first 3 tubs (1st grow) -had gnats infect one of my tubs (only 1, phew) -got youtube educated from all the wrong people before I found shroomery, though I managed to avoid many pitfalls (like uncle ben's almost guaranteed failure tek)

Thanks, really. And I'm probably going to add activated charcoal so they be black
I was asking about that just last week. It seems that people are having trouble with stalling. I'm mostly interested in the black plate so I may just go for black food coloring

Make sure you use heat resistant food coloring or you'll have a surprise once you take it out of the PC. Americolor gel is great, avoid the red one (has natural fungicide in it)

I've tried multiple times to sterilize for reuse, polystyrene petri dishes. All failures. I've got about 40 used ones sitting around for idk why.

Alright gents. Just for the record LC is very easy. To keep with the thread, I've remembered another weird thing I do. I often harvest like 3-5 times because I have shitty uneven growth genetics and I'm a bit neurotic, which means I have to keep fucking dehydrating.
Anyway, back to LC.
This is the original SSLC tek. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26689470 This is the Josex Poke. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=2&Number=24740168&PHPSESSID=&fpart=1#24740168 This is Josexs SSLC method. I recently did it, IMO it's a little light on agar, but you get very fast colonization. I'd split the difference between Josex ratio and the original SSLC ratio.
Regardless of which route you go, read through all of those just so you have a good idea of what's going on. It's literally as easy as making LC lids (whataman filter, SHIP), then putting agar, LME and water in a jar. Pressure cook. That's it, then josex poke some agar into a syringe with some sterilized water (boil water, suck up water, let it sit for a minute in the syringe. Eject water. 3x. Do it again and don't eject the water, just cap the syringe. Then a little later after it's cooled, stab a piece of mycelium with the needle. Shoot it into the LC jar through the SHIP.
I don't know why everyone acts like LC is hard, it's very, very easy IMO. IMO people are scaring others acting like LC is tough. Either that or I'm lucky to have found a successful way to do it as an idiot who doesn't know shit.
SSLC allows you to immediately shake or roll the jar, make sure all of it's coated, if you use like 5ml, it'll take like a week or two. If you use more, it will take much less time to fully colonize, yet you don't want to fuck up the water ratio with like 30ml, though I've heard reports of that being fine.
It's so dope. It won't pass a turbidity test though, so don't try that shit on it.
-------------------- If you've never grown mushrooms before, here's how you start. First, follow the Updated PF Tek, put 4 holes in jar lids not 1, and use a water tub! The next move is Shoebox Tek. After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs. Agar is easy, just do it. Other useful links - Picture guide for how things should look and proper surface conditions guide Growing APE or PE? I never did PF tek but that's cause I read a bunch and started with agar into Muda Bottles and shit was great.
However more recently, I did the really dumb thing you're not supposed to do and now I'm getting a shit ton of agar contam.... I changed a bunch of things at once and I'm not sure which of the 5 things I changed is causing it.
Now I'm kinda walking it back one by one.

I also recently learned that I'm supposed to vent my PC.
I used to do a lot of work in open air even though I had a SAB because I thought I could make the entire room a SAB by turning the AC off for about an hour and spraying the entire room with soap water.

Why are you licking it though? You got a link for that aliexpress sterilization sleeve? On topic of this thread I started out doing that dumb brown rice thing so many from reddit do. Even though I knew about this place, and knew I was probably going to get contaminations.

Good tips. I'll play around with it eventually, I'm sure.
To be honest, though, I don't have an opinion on its difficulty level. My concerns and hesitation revolve around the fact that it would be new and experimental for me, and would involve potentially risking failure on a large amount of grain. As I mentioned, I've recently been struggling with a backlog of spawn jars, so speeding up colonization is not really on my radar right now. I've also got more cultures than space/time, and nothing stands out so much right now that I think "I wish I could take just that one culture and quickly expand it to dozens of jars." When I have that thought, I'll go right back to your advice/summary and start from there.
I don't really think avoiding LC is a confessable offense. Being afraid of it might be, but I digress...
I kind of feel the same way about the multiple harvests you mentioned. No shame in that. I typically have multiple tubs in different stages of development, and I'd rather spread my picking out anyway. So I really make no effort to achieve uniform flushes that exhaust a tub in one or two rounds. If it happens, cool, but I simply don't care, as it's not relevant to my goals or setup. Now, compulsively checking and picking every 12 hours could be a confessable sin, but I digress...

Reasonable stance. Honestly I made some lids, and made 6 SSLCs via Josex numbers, and so far I've used 2 of them, got 2 more that'll be ready in a week, and the final 2 will be when I get my new spores in a bit. I just keep jars ready for a Josex poke, and whenever I have new genetics I want to run, I add them to the jar. 2 weeks later, I'll have another reason to PC some jars. It's nice that being ok at growing mushrooms means you'll have way more than you need all the time once shit gets going.
I don't really need the colonization speed, but imo I want to know all the best techniques. I look forward to learning... I'm going to call it SirPsychos even though it isn't his, but that ziplock quart container thing where you can grow on all sorts of nonsense. I just want to know all the things I can know, but I don't give a shit about old, or inferior techniques unless they have a unique quality that I could benefit from in the future, making the knowledge valuable. For all the best shit though, I feel like I gotta know, not because it'll help me, but because I fucking love knowing shit.

I confess my first attempt at cult was with a grow kit. Purchased from an ad in the back of High Times magazine in the mid 90’s. It consisted of a ratty spore print, a pint canning jar of “sterilized” but dry wild bird seed, and a plastic bag. Directions were to add water to the grain, shake, add spores, get mush. I was so OCD about contaminating this thing that I took it to work and inoculated it inside a bio safety cabinet. Never crossed my mind that adding tap water to grain would make any other sterile technique irrelevant. Needless to say I grew mold.
