Oh that reminds me.
Forgive me father-mush for I have committed the sin of stupidity. My first ever grow, I made an incubator for my spore plates out of a drink cooler, hot water and empty jars to keep the agar plates (half-pint jars) out of the water. Still took about 10 days to germ.

i confess having grown my first mushrooms by putting a readymade growbox in a tub, which was actually a glovebox, and i changed the air in the box by sucking air with a vaccuum cleaner through a valve. the entrance hole to the sealed box was a ffp3 filter patch. hahahaha good times

As I drifted off to sleep last night, I somehow dredged up memories of my first quart jar lids, the metal 2-piece ones that came with the jars. Holes punched for air exchange and (spore syringe) inoculation.
All covered with a layer of tyvek.
From the post office.
Truly a sin, in addition to being an unnecessary and counterproductive pain in the ass. We need to do what we can to differentiate this hobby from people stealing shit at Wal-Mart to make meth with. And the postal service deserves our honest support. If they go under or privatize, as some would like them to, we'll lose the last bastion of relative shipping privacy and fairness.

thats funny. my first lids were also post office, Tyvek. a layer of polyfil under that and then tyvek on top. the ring secured it all. I think they were pretty much standard convention Back then. They worked.

90 Mesh cheesecloth stops fungus gnats, as the hole size is too small for them to get through. Sterilizing, once spawn is put to bulk, isn't an issue and wouldn't have stopped mold developing later on anyway. Also, this is a confessional thread, rather than one asking for advice on things that we've already learned.

Youβve come to the right place.
The trial by fire is one of godβs many tests for us. Some see the isopropyl SAB explosion and sacrifice of body hair as an act of devotion to the faith.
I committed the sin of prioritizing my life over mush cult this week, and allowed an avoidable spot of mold to go green and jizz nasties all over a plate I wanted to keep. I will recite my hail Maryβs through each ensuing moldy transfer, and when I finally decide to throw them all out.
Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

I'm skeptical of that claim.
Gnats can do ANYthing.
They were sent by divine providence to make us humble and test our resolve.
Seriously, though, I'm very skeptical of that.

I have observed them in the gap between the imperfect lid and tub rim in sterilite tubs. I MPβd my holes as a line of defense, but I know I am not safe from their wrath.
