A word about Karo Tek

It's a hell of an innovation, don't get me wrong. Just be careful. I am now on the last batch of around 70 jars inoculated with 3 seperate batches of some Karo, all contaminated. There is nothing inside of the Karo that looks like anything except healthy myc. I'm sure it's the Karo holding the contaminates as well because i throughly cleaned all my syringes out and even put a control jar (with holes poked) in the incubation chamber just to see if it was jumping inside the jars. The control jar is as healthy as can be, nearly 5 weeks after making it, and most of the contamed jars had to already be thrown out because of an excess smell...
Karo's great, but if you get one, tiny insignificant little contaminate in there, it will ruin everything without you having the slightest clue as to what's going on. Happy travels, all.

maybe you should examine your practices for sterility, also from each jar of kayro you should innoculate one jar of grain for testing contamination...

I'm always as clean as i can be with things like this. I have also had these Karo jars for months and months of many seperate inoculations in two seperate locations so it was really just a matter of time. Thanks for the quick reply, but i really just made this thread as a cautionary note to everyone who uses this stuff. It really boggles me that the contam is actually in the Karo but apparently not growing and not visible. And yes, you're totally right, a check should always be done when using old or (if you're not too clean) new Karo just to make sure. 1 Jar is a hell of a lot better than 70...

Screw Karo tek, use G2G. 70 jars! you should haev goten a $35 12" impulse selaer off ebay and 100 medium mycobags without injection site for $30 (just G2G in a flowhood and seal) What kind of jars and what substrate? why would you ever need 70 jars? If your usng 70 jars as spawn then WOW! even if your just going straight gran thats still wow! Im geting ready to make what i would consider a big batch of 8 mycobags (8 gal of spawn) and ill be working for a good 4 days setting up the 3 diffrent grows.
And you should alwasy get all your teks down before using it to such an extent. learn with a few jars make sure it works then multiply the volume. Thats allot of hard work down the drain.

I use honey (which alegedly has some mild anti-microbial properties to start with), then pressure cook the solution before innoculation. I leave the gum seal down, so the jars actually pressure seal and I can keep them for as long as I want before innoculating them.
I can't say how many jars I've doen, but the contamination rate has been very low except when I screw up my spore prints

I have never had much luck with liquid mycelium...in fact the only thing I could get to at least germinate was karo...I've tried millet water, straw water and honey...none of them grew anything but contams...my last 2 karos I tried were looking great but had to be dumped so I'm not sure if they were ok or not but I suspect they were

Well that's the thing, the 70 (now about 80) jars were spread over a 4 or 5 week period. We only did them in batches of 20 or so. The sad thing is, is that when i first started with liquid myc it worked wonderfully: no contams, incredible growth rate, all that. It just seems that time has gotten the best of it. I still have one batch of some Samui Classic that i'm going to try out.

^^ good advice. I thought I had it down...

maybe this was discussed in this thread and i missed it but are all these contamed jars of substrate innoced from one karo jar? or several? and when you make a new karo jar do you start from multi spore or from liquid myc?
