An Avian flu outbreak, control protocols, and then some absolutely decimated the eggy market. Who knows how many millions upon millions of chickens have been culled since the start of it all.
Roughly 1.5 years ago I could buy 18 eggs for $0.89. Now, today 18 eggs costs ~ $7.19 (for the cheapos).

Didn't Congress set up subsidiaries for the diary Inustry?

What does it matter? Those subsidies aren't going to keep prices down if an avian flu outbreak effects supply.

I get that subsidies are usually used to keep a commodity down, but I don't think throwing money at a problem like a large percentage of an egg producing population dying off and effecting the total supply of eggs. It can buy new equipment and help pay for workers etc but at the end of the day when the supply goes down and the demand is up the price is going to go up.

Theyre supposed to be running a surplus not just pocketing the money

I get that. But more money isn't going to necessarily produce more eggs...them pocketing the money is aside the point. I'm not going to act like I have full understanding of the situation, but outside of problems like understaffing, how is throwing money at that industry going to create more eggs so the prove can be lowered? I can see it being a help for resources to contain and prevent future outbreaks. Otherwise it ses like it's just an opportunity for big farms to pocket the money like you were saying . There should be a lot more oversight into how subsidies are spent. They obviously aren't having the intended effect

There's alot of pros and cons to farm subsidies. What were seeing here is tantamount to price gouging. Companies like cal Maine could of course operate with in very comfortable margins but instead have chosen to take advantage of the situation for record profits. I wish idiots would refuse to pay these prices. Just stop eating eggs till this blows over. We need to push states to sue these companies to get some of the money back and force these companies to comply. No dealz either.

Subsidies for the dairy industry are not to keep prices cheap. The subsidies enact a price support. Meaning the point of these subsidies are to ensure it is profitable for farmers to continue producing these products. There is a difference between consumer subsidies (price control) and producer subsidies (price support).

Egg price is a direct supply-demand effect, I guess Biden could start laying eggs himself and if he could lay a couple million a day it would decrease prices. He is such an asshole that he won't do that for the nation. Trump lays the best eggs. Beautiful and huge.

Right and it's my point that it's an inflated demand caused by a crisis which companies that are unaffected or less effected are taking advantage of. That's called price gouging. It's not only bad for your brand it's unethical.

Look I'm normally a pretty free market guy but in the event of a crisis I don't think it's right to take advantage of folks. A comfortable profit sure the market demands it but any further is simpley unethical. If these companies can't afford to operate because of a failure to forsee something as highly probable as this or afford to weather the few months or whatever it takes to build back egg laying chickens they probably shouldn't be in business.

I raised chickens for a stretch. Felt stupid when I found out that they don't need a rooster to lay eggs. The rooster I did have was mean AF. He picked on one hen in particular and tore out her tailfeathers after some in out, in out.

Meh, they're still not that expensive. Now if they get to $100 a dozen, then we can talk.
