Eureka city council OKs letter supporting hallucinogen decriminalization
January 19, 2023 - Eureka Times Standard

On Tuesday, the Eureka City Council unanimously voted to sign a letter of support for a state bill that would decriminalize the use of certain hallucinogenic drugs in California.

The council directed Mayor Kim Bergel to sign a letter supporting Senate Bill 58, authored by State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), which would decriminalize psilocybin, psilocyn, dimethyltryptamine, mescaline and ibogaine, though it excludes peyote.

“There’s all these real defended medical benefits that are derived from things that currently are illegal. You know, at one time, cannabis was illegal and we’ve, we’ve come to see it as, for a lot of people, as a medicine,” Councilmember Scott Bauer said.

Bauer and other councilmembers pointed out the mental health issues present in Eureka, and how supporting the expansion of treatment options, especially to those with treatment resistant diseases, could aid the city.

The bill is the second of a similar type in as many years, Wiener’s previous bill proposing decriminalizing hallucinogens failed to reach the governor’s desk.

Due to the possibility of failure, several public commenters with a group called Decriminalize Nature Humboldt encouraged the city to draft its own ordinance decriminalizing hallucinogens within Eureka.

Bauer noted that decriminalize does not mean legalize, it just shifts public funds away from enforcing laws banning the drugs.

“I know my friends in law enforcement who pretty universally disagree with this bill. I just hope we can figure out a better way,” Bauer said. “I think probably every substance we use to help people was probably illegal at one time.”

The other council members concurred with Bauer, leading to the unanimous vote for Bergel to sign the letter.

Several of the public commenters addressed the potential healing effects of several of the substances listed in the bill, some sharing personal experiences.

Jen Bruce, a founding member of Decriminalize Nature Humboldt, told the council about her experience traveling to Mexico for an ibogaine treatment but noted that such endeavors take time and money, two things many Eureka residents lack.

“I was honored to work with the first cohort of veterans to go through ibogaine therapy. I get a lot of private clients, they have to be privileged to afford to leave the country and illegally access these life-saving treatments and soul-saving treatments where nothing else works,” Bruce said. “It’s been frustrating for me to have to get on an airplane and only bring my clients that have the eliteness to afford to be able to go and do these things while driving by all of these people in my community that suffer that don’t have the access to these treatments.”

Councilmember Kati Moulton noted that the more normalized controlled substances become, the more families can have candid conversations about them, dispelling black market rumors and legends.

Cali will be forever changed and the migrants will take them and turn it into a paradise and their will be no more looting and homeless.

Does anyone notice nature wise and money wise what is really important in California.  This is just a distraction as PEOPLE DON"T GET FUCKED WITH TAKING SHROOMS THERE.

Simple.  Just try to make what was once the best habitat in the nation destroyed in time, back to what it was.  Lol.:chesire::beer:

Clean it up Veggie.  Flush it down as the Tool lyric says and having just been there, not a bad idea.  Think with all the flooding, mudslides, etc. God/life is agreeing with me but definitely mushrooms are so extreemly bad.

We have all watched the HBO show, we know what happens.
