Possible Omphalotus olearius find....need some help with ID
    #2814641 - 06/21/04 06:17 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I found several beautiful Jack O Lantern shrooms {i think}...they were growing out of a decomposed oak log ....they have orange gills and i think the spores are orange as well...the gills do run down the stalk
My only referance is my Texas Mushrooms  field guide book ...written by Susan and Van Metzler...page 143
Im going to wet a few down and see if they are indeed luminescence...
I dont have my  camera until tomorrow...
Any help from Angry,Gumby,Toxic or any other of you good mycologist is welcome....I really lucked out yesterday because i found several other specimins also..

If they are, wanna get me a spore print? I'm looking for some luminescent species to play with.

paw paw, I think it's a little early for omphalotus olearius
even in The great state of Texas.. It's usually a fall species..
to the best of my knowledge...

Have you looked into the possibility you may actually have
chanterelles.... here's a link where you can see both...
the link for chanterelles is at the bottom of the page...
good luck... Happy Hunting... Pub man...good to see you in the hunting forum...

jack o lantern and chanterelles...

I know chanterelles and these arent them at all...The caps are yellow and thats whats making this id hard...the first time i found these it was in august but we have had the wetest month on record here so thats why they are growing early...I guess i need to try printing them on some black paper because the spores are supposed to be white.
I only picked a few younger and older ones so they are plenty more where these are...I knew if i kept going back to where i saw them about 3 yrs ago that i might find some more...I still need some input from MJ Gumby ectera for a positive id...
Hopefully i have ided them properly because there are a bunch of people who would like a print....

Indeed, if they are Omphalotus, they'll drop white spores.

While Jack O'Lanterns are one of the species commonly listed as being luminescent, not all specimens are. Also, the luminescence (I hear) is usually not very bright. But let us know if you can see it.

The spore print should come out white to pale cream colored.

The biggest features for IDing them are that they grow in clusters from wood, have an overall orangish color, decurrent gills, tapering stems without rings, and white to pale cream spore prints.

Happy mushrooming!

Im gonna ck them later to see if they are luminescence...
The gills are very orange ...a very pretty shroom
The gills dont go down the stem as far as a chanterelle
