Turning a walk-in refrigerator into a mushroom sanctuary * 1
    #27887732 - 08/03/22 07:24 AM (1 year, 5 months ago)

Hey all,

New to the board and to mushrooms in general.  As I start down the cultivation path I've been considering taking the 8x12 cold room I built to hang meat and turn it into a growing room for mushrooms when it's not in use.  The cooling system allows me to to control the temps to within a couple degrees of anything from 32-100F and I can add humidity to the room.  It's also a clean space that's sealed from everything else and I can hose the whole thing down with bleach on a whim to ensure it stays clean and mold free.  Any thoughts on what would be the ideal conditions in a space like that for mushrooms to grow?  I'm thinking 70-72f with about 70% humidity based on my research along with some lights for 12hr light.  Would a UV-C light that could be activated when not in the space be useful to keep contaminants down, and would that harm the mushrooms?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Very cool! Im pretty jelly.

Sounds like all of your parameters are ideal. I would also add that having a way to turn off all fans to make a Still Air Room would be ideal when working with grains/substrates/inoculation.

Im pretty sure that UV-C light is safe for mushrooms. Mushrooms prefer light in the blue-to-UV spectrum lighting.

Im excited to hear what happens! :bliss: :mushroomgrow: :shroomeryhead: :mushroomgrow: :bliss:

Thanks for the comments, I can turn off the air for sure and was considering that for when I do inoculations etc.  I'll post more when things get busy.

If you can afford to set up an 8x12 walk in box, I think it's a great idea.
