San Pedro stump, how to make sure it keeps growing?
    #28144383 - 01/17/23 12:26 PM (1 year, 11 days ago)

Hey guys I have honestly searched around the internet, here included, on information regarding growing San Pedro from a fresh stump. Three days ago I cut 18” (top cut) off my San Pedro for Tea. I tried to cut it at an angle I can always cut it more for water pooling. But my question is the roots are obviously full and still healthy in the soil. The cactus seems to still be healthy just dried a bit on top. It had regrown before it was sold to me bc I cut it right where it had been cut before regrowing. I guess my question is, I see a lot about planting cuttings and getting top cuttings to grow, or middle cuttings. But what about when you take the top cutting and only have the stump still planted in the soil with its roots in tact. Do I just let it callous and water it? Or should I have not let the top dry at all?
Any help would be appreciated thank you!

Place in the shade in a warm spot and let the top callous over.
If it is rooted, should start pushing out pups from the top.

It's fine.

It has a callous forming, will soon begin to produce pups from an areoles, and will be OK.

I have cut Pedro outside in full sun and let them callous over with all the outdoor stimuli/stressors an outdoor cactus receives and my cacti were fine.  It's relatively hard to kill cactus.

If you make cuts just make sure to sterilize the knife with rubbing alcohol, but cactus lose arms rather readily from age in the wild and are usually fine, they're sturdy things!
