My flowhood in progress
    #2814364 - 06/21/04 04:27 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

CHeck out my flowhood ive been working on. So far ive put in about 4 hours of work. All thats left is to cut and install the plexyglass, install the fans about 5" above the pre filter and trim the extra wood. It's 40" now but i realized its better to have the fans sucking freely and then blow into the prefilter which is resting on top the hepa filters. Originaly i planed to have the fane internal with the prefilter on top but it shorter and simpler like this.

"You know you've achieved perfection in design,
not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing more to take away."

I ghetto rigged the flowhood for a test by taping the fans on top. It works great! A nice breze of filtered air . Ill be finishing and paining it tomorrow and test it by pouring some agar plates. BTW total cost

wood free (scrap)
fans $10 (used at auction)
250cfm hepa filters $50 shipped
plexyglass free (Scrap)

so thats $60, im happy

This thread is more than 6 years old :-)

I doubt that thing ever worked properly. That sort of thin plywood, cheap blowers and cheap hepa filters, just would not make a proper flow hood.

You can get filters at: www.fungi.com also elsewhere.

I spent about $600-700 building mine, 36"x24"x6" hepa, heavy duty dayton blower, and heavy duty 3/4" wood. The filter alone was around $250-300 if I remember correctly. Maybe a bit less, but not $50. The blower was a couple hundred.

You have to make sure you get a blower than can handle high back pressure, many high CFM units can't.

Also, you shouldn't "feel a breeze" from a flowhood. I was confused about that when I built mine (7 years ago) - thought I had built it wrong - but you shouldn't really feel anything, except a rumbling from the huge fan. Mine blows an imperceptible amount of air, enough to blow a match out up close but not much more than that. Standing in front of it working, you can't really feel it. If you can feel a breeze, its too much, and will disturb and blow contaminants around too much.

My blower weighs like 50lbs, and puts out an ungodly amount of air outside the flowhood. I certainly wouldn't try holding it when its on :-)

Heres a link to my thread a long time ago that has some good info in it, dunno if all the links still work.

Have you ever noticed that the amounts that people are gone for sound like prison sentences?

"Young man I sentence you to three years and five months for the production of a class three controlled substance with the intent to distribute."

There has to be a reason, no one just drops off the face of the internet.

Lots of old posters just kinda disappear...unless they only post in edibles.
