Innoculation with agar wedge
    #587773 - 03/24/02 12:41 AM (21 years, 10 months ago)

When innoculating with a wedge of colonized agar, it isn't the agar wedge that make colonization occur so fast in birdseed or grain jars, it's the fact that u can shake them and distribute the mycelium and the extra air exchange w. the polyfill or filter disc lids, is this correct? If so, how long (on average) would u expect a pint jar of BRF or Rye to colonize if kept at ideal temps and innoculated w. agar wedge?? thanks!!!

Part of why colonization is faster from agar is because you don't have to wait around for germination of the spores. My friend can get four cups of rye berries to fully colonize from agar transfer in under two weeks at 83F in total darkness. Four cups, under the same conditions, will fully colonize in under one week with the addition of one cup of spawn rather than an agar wedge.

No idea on timeframes for pint jars. I wouldn't use pint jars or BRF with agar transfer. The jars are too small to bother with and the BRF is sticky and hard to shake up.

No, it's because you are starting with live, healthy tissue rather than from dormant spores that must have time to germinate.
