I was buying lots at a time and the people behind the till were always like wtf. I just said I had a pregnant girlfriend who loves pickles atm lol.
Yeah their plates fkn suck, if you haven't already check out Better Equipped. They are really sturdy plates.
God damn it I reallyyyyy fancy pickles now. Funny thing is I actually almost bought a jar a few hours ago and I am now regretting not doing so.
I gave everyone vacuum sealed goldfish bags of pickles this Christmas as gag gifts... little did they know
Decent jars are weirdly hard to find here compared to the $15 pallets of quart jars they have stateside. The Poundland jars cracked in the autoclave (at 126c, admittedly) and Homebargains never seem to stock the big ones. I don't think Hobbycraft even sell their absurdly expensive £10/4pk quart jars anymore, and nor do Wilko. Guess I'll stick to mostly using SacO2 bags.

I bought all my Kilner 1L jars from cooksmill.co.uk
They're less than half the price you'll find them in other stores
I can't find the actual listing because the site is a pain to navigate, but its worth searching for.. they have other brands of jars too

Home bargains have them back in stock where I am for the first time in over 6 months. I got all I need now but keep checking back to see if they have them!

No they suck here. They don't get up to 15psi and they're small as fuck.

Yeah I imported both of my Presto 23qts from the US via eBay. I started with a tiny 7L prestige off of Amazon which was the only one that gets up to 15psi. There’s now a range of large PC’s on uk Amazon that claim to get to 15psi and are some no name Japanese shit. I’d stay far way myself…..

Mine is 6L and gets a bit above 11Psi but sucks. I was thinking about ordering a presto, but the shipping cost is like double the cost of the presto

No. I bought a 19L Chinese electric dental autoclave for £150 and hooked it up to a Pt100 PID controller I made for about £30 including the thermowell. >£200 for a Presto after import, no thanks.

Just had a quick look, you can get one for £165’s including shipping. Worth it all day long in my opinion.

I just did the same thing. With import tax at checkout it came to £208 cheapest. Roughly £120 plus £40 shilling before. Even £165 would be pushing it a bit for an aluminium pot imo.
Probably still the best option if you're not interested in fiddling around making a knock-off All American electric steriliser slash regular benchtop autoclave.

Man those plate ARE wack! Had some cracked in the sleeves and I swear I've heard snaps when putting on parafilm.
Also I got a few dozen hobby craft jars recently. First load in them, had some sticky millet, my fault of course but I really gave them some what for shaking and 1 I couldn't get some of the clumps to break up and 2 I had one shatter just a little bit way to close to my face. I'm fine no harm done but fuck me does millet make a mess. First time I've broke a jar shaking in 12 years.
I've got an AA921 and a couple presto 23s. They're all great but I do like the all metal seal and the heat/ retention on the AA. Much better for agar and lc so they don't boil over and blow seals on stick on filters and injection ports. Also have the AA rigged with PID.

Not a supplies related post but I do have a question for my UK folk.
I'm pretty happy with my tub setup, it's basically EZ dial but slightly modified.
I want to start experimenting with other setups just to see if there is a better one that I don't currently use.
Anyone here in the UK using polyfil in a setup like this?

I've accidentally smashed those exact jars too. I didn't even smack it that hard and it practically exploded in my hand. The rubber lid seal likes to fuse to the jar after a while too. I hate jars so much.
Side note, I've seen 12 packs of 500ml jars in Wilko with coated lids and pre-drilled holes pretty cheap. A little small though.

Yeah I’ve had hobby craft jars break on me a few times. Luckily they were just LC jars and were broken upon opening the PC. I guess it’s a real bad idea to use these for grain, good information!

Anyone here have a solid impulse sealer? The ones on Amazon are cheap shite and unsuitable.
I need a 16" sealer with a 5mm seal but it looks like I'm gonna have to import one from the states.
I'm looking at at least £300 before import charges, and then I'll have to rewire the fucking thing to a UK plug.
What a PITA.
Going to have a hunt and see if I can find a cheaper one that actually ships to the UK, otherwise it's eBay.
Edit:
I say this, but I haven't tried my cheap Amazon sealer in years. I asked this same question in this thread nearly a year ago, and it looks like I was having issues with my current sealer that's sitting in the cupboard.
Somebody did recommend one of those cheap blue ones and said it works fine. Maybe I just don't have the right seal width on my current one.
I'm just listening to Mike Myers Mushrooms and his recommendations on sealer length and width.
I dunno. There's gotta be a reason people (even in the states) go for the super expensive ones and not these cheap ass ones.

My generic sealer works fine... ish. I wouldn't use it for super high volume stuff but for a couple of bags it's okay once you calibrate the heat setting and make sure to check the seal(s). I prefer zip ties. I've heard of people replacing the filament with a wider one for a better seal but I've never tried it.

I bought a used heavy duty black one 400mm one. I don't know if the electronics are any different to the blue ones. I have a new 400mm blue as well. I'd like to compare them, but I digress.
I replaced the seal on the black one with a 10mm sealer today just used it for its first 22 5kg xls bags. I was pretty happy with it even after pressure testing, but like most sealers moisture, debris, and wrinkles still really effected it. Had to have it all the way turned up.
I got a 10 packs of the seals on aliexpress.
