They're all "subs", and from generally the same area, but in quite a few separate patches. The main pheno is the dainty sterile ones with relatively flimsy stipes for subs, they often struggle to push their way through the cabbage tree debris and end up all twisted curled up underneath. Then there are the dark wavey capped ones with a strong straight stipe. I really like these ones, unfortunately it's only a small 1m2 area where they are growing. Then some more squat ones with almost a slight green tinge to the caramel cap. They aren't so photogenic, not sure that they feature in this lot of photos

I note how you put it as "subs" because there are at least three different species that are distinctly different from each other, but share some common properties.
 the frillies
the waveys
 and the flats
the frilly ones look as though they are somewhere halfway between the flats and the waveys (caramel coloured with dense meaty flesh, probnably ps.cyans), but I believe this to be subjective, based on assumptions of gene inheritance. I must say that the biggest specimens I've ever found were of the frilly variety
Here you can see two types growing (competing) the same area, and not producing halfway offspring, although that could be debated by the looks of things in the second picture. But I believe they are separate species.

yeah i don't know enough personally to say what is phenotype variation, environmental influences, what makes something a separate species etc. Recently some Australian did a study and found that azurescens and cyans are just subs (apparently) and genetically match samples from Australia. Apparently we have various "subs" sequenced as various things, wereroa are apparently very close to cyans, I've seen people start to refer to frills as makarore aff. ... until more research is done and we can definitively say whats what, I'm just calling them subs with a description if i feel the need like dainty sterile or as you say flats, frills, and waveys. Mostly I find dainty steriles and what you would call flats, but have one small patch of waveys. Steriles seem to generally be a bit less substantial with weaker stipes, the waveys have very straight strong stipes and firm flesh. Its a bit like "tasmaniana" for a while there has been this debate that what we are calling tas doesn't match the original description, which is right from what i can see. i've heard people speculate that it was in fact alutacea that was found and named tasminiana originally, which would mean what we call alutacea, is actually tasmaniana because it was described first (i think). In the end it's "tasmaniana" for me even though there are probably a few different species being called that.

Hey So you're saying there's actually subspecies within the ps. Subs group? That's really interesting. Definitely notice a variation in how they can look in Melbourne, Victoria but I always assumed it was due to different ages of specimens

Oh OK I didn't realise they are so fickle about conditions. Explains why I've found no subs lately.

Same here. I checked a sub patch yesterday and only saw these weird flat orange worm/slug things that I've never seen before.

Just moved from Whangarei to the Waikato. I have access to Cambridge and Hamilton now. A shame that I've stopped hunting

This has been the most disappointing season, I hope next year is an improvement as it is hard to imagine it could be any worse. Even non-active types normally seen in abundance have been scarce. It will henceforth be recalled by me as the great sucking of balls season.

Though I didn't haul like last season I actually had quite a rewarding season finding new spots, some of which i started myself. Also finding prolific grass "tasmaniana" was a bit of a thrill. I didn't end up posting too much toward the end of the season but was still finding some beautiful sterile subs..... Normally there isn't too much going on at the moment and if it is it's secos, sadly there is a rahui on the area where my main second patch is so can't check it...... but i did find a few late season subs while checking that the wood chip i put out in Aug was being colonised.
