sam11: You can identify active pans?! Good on you, how common are the active pans to the non active pans?? Or were they Liberty caps?

I think they're "tasmaniana " with a few sterile ones in there with pale gills. I saw that someone in the hokianga found some pan cyanescens so I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for them. As far as pans go I've only ever found cinctulus

Those are chunky for sure. Does the P. Tasmaniana have multiple phenotypes like subs? These have the cap color I’d expect from tassies, but they’re a lot beefier than the ones I recall seeing last year. Take it with a grain of salt because I’m in the northern hemisphere.

Yep they can vary quite a lot. The ones I've been finding are also tasmaniana, I'm pretty sure, just growing in different conditions. Some of them look like semilanceta, others quite like subaeruginosa.
Vs
Picked in the same paddock. I'm pretty sure they are both tasmaniana.

Awesome finds Sam
We have had good mushroom weather in chch so I'm seeing more spots coming up.
This is a week of growth of subs in a wood chip garden.
I also found this nice patch.
And some non-actives going ham.

Pic for attention (found today - looking beautiful), but a question too: how do folks prep their stuff after it's been dried? I usually just chop it up really small. Does anyone crush it to a powder or use any other process to improve it or just make it nicer to use? Does the prep have any other effect?

New favorite way is to powder then mix with dark chocolate. Apparently some thing in the dark chocolate is slightly synergistic and if the shrooms are properly powered then you don't notice them at all... until you do

I like mushroom tea using a french press. Chuck the mushrooms in with hot water wait 5-10 mins give it a stir or two along the way, strain and drink. Tastes like a vary weak version of instant mushroom soup. It filters out any grit or sand and makes it easy to dose multiple people.

Do you add anything else like lemon, honey or ginger? I had my first go at tea a while back and it worked well. Came on fast and smooth, no nausea.

I have not tried any additives, the taste is really not offensive to me. But a nice Lemon-honey-mushroom tea does sound good.
I'm trying something new this year. Normally I just wash off my spore prints into a spray bottle then spray that around potential patches. This year I am roughly following the natural cultivation chapter in GGMM. So far I have done the following: Using a few of the lager mushroom found this season cut out the gills; soak gills in distilled water for 4 hours; strain the gill solution; add to 10L of distilled water along with 2.5g of brewing yeast nutrition powder and 20g of malt extract powder. The plan next is to use a garden sprayer to inoculate many wood chip gardens. I don't think I have much of a chance of doing that inconspicuously, so it might be time to break out the high-vis and a clipboard.

G'day everyone . So I'm from Aus and every winter we have subs all over the place where I am. Ill be over in NZ for August and though would be cool to find something in my travels. My question is, is North Island any good for subs? If so is August any good? I have no idea on your seasons it just seems to be cold and then colder with snow 🤣 take it easy ✌️

August might be okay Faty, bit late in the season but you never know. If you go bush walking keep your eyes open for ps wereroa.
Found a few new spots today in an area that I spread stembutts a few years ago.
