Today LizardKing and I went on a Chanterelle hunt. We were out in the woods for a good 2 hours or more and probably covered a few miles. Total Chanterelle haul was somewhere around 4-5 pounds I'm guessing.
Here's the pics...
The Chanterelles first:
Here are the dirty chanterelles with the essential mushroom hunting item... bugspray. The crap didn't work well. I still managed to get a tick on my leg.
Cleaned and cut chanterelles:
Something I've never found before, Red Chanterelles:
There were tons of Russla and Lactarius mushrooms out there today, here's some interesting Russlas:
Boletes:
A Ganoderma species:
Some unidentified Gyms:
An Amanita:
Unidentified mushroom with a neat cap:
This was probably our rarest find of the day, a baby deer taking a nap:

Man, you are starting to get very dangerous with that new camera.
The mushroom photos were incredible...But the baby deer sleeping...Simply amazing. Stuff like that is hard to capture for a Discovery Channel special. But to catch it in person. And even manage to get a photo is majorly awesome.

Im jelious. I wish it were mushroom season here. Its weird to think that just over there in Georgia you are having the peak of the season, while we on the west coast are completely dry.
Awesome pictures man, its great to see someone is finding some interesting specimens!

The red chantrelles are beautiful- found a clusterof five last season in a dry creek bed and thought they were so beautiful I was waiting to find more to pick them but found only those. I can't believe you found gyms at this point in the season- so I know what I must do- go and face the bugs (ticks wasps hornets flies that chase me and jap. hornets) and get out in the damn woods. You're hunting some real rich woods looks like. Beautiful.

Sweet finds, that baby deer is excellent..
The reddish Chanterelle's are C. cinnabarius, it grows well here in florida, but some people complain that it gives them an upset stomach, but not everyone. They're treated in the book "Common Florida Mushrooms". I've found a good deal of both the Chanterelle you found, but in northern florida, less often (unfortunately) in south florida.
Someone bought me a little Citranella plant, and i wondered if i could use that stuff to keep the misquitos away, if i rubbed the leaves all over my arms and neck and legs, because it smells exactly like citranella candles you get at the store. A possible natural way of repelling bugs, opposed to the spray
Nice pics and hunt, say hi to the lizard for me.

DH, I think I know where to find some Cantharellus subalbidus (White Chanterelles)in the fall...
But there is a catch. They fruit at the same time Cyan season is peaking and they require a drive over the pass...tough choice.

Great finds and wonderful pictures! I am wondering what the habitat was like where you found the chanterelles. I was trying to figure out what type of trees there were from the groundcover in the pics, but it's hard to tell. I know beeches are a favorite of black trumpets, and chanterelles like oak and beech and other hardwoods, but I want to have a better picture, as the season is approaching in my area. Thanks Gumby!

Hey Gumby, that Ganoderma mushroom, do you have any other infor about it? I have one that looks exactly like that growing on a queen sago palm in my yard, and I thought I found some new genre of fungus, lol. I guess not, but thats funny you posted a pic of one here. I have a couple pics of it.
BTW, that deer picture is incredible!
