Silica gel with indicator color

Anyone use those silica beads that change color? I didn't realize when I bought them that they contained a chemical called cobalt chloride that I guess can be dangerous... anyone know if the small amount on the silica packs would be dangerous? I hate buying shit just to throw it out...

I'm not sure if my silica color indicator packs contain that particular chemical as I'm not home to check ... but .... I always make sure to purchase ones that claim to be "food safe".
Its possible that the ones I use either contain a different active chemical altogether, or they are within a packet preventing immediate contact with such chemical.... I'm not sure.
Interesting question though.

Idk but im curious to see the answer I was gettimg ready to order some silica packets. I want regular but most of the options I see are rhe color changing ones. So I didn't want to rule anything out altogether.

Yeah if they go from blue to pink it's most likely contains cobalt chloride... it's nice being able to see how much moisture is being picked up but not worth it obviously if its gonna make me sick...

edit:
blue to pink indicating silica packets are not the best to use with food according to the link above
here is a link to indicating silica packets that are food grade

I would use pure white

They shouldn't be touching the food/mushrooms anyway. And if you dry them and store them properly you don't need absorbent beads at all

Well the silica beads are in a pouch so they dont directly touch anything and I get what you mean about drying/storing them properly but I'm concerned about the moisture getting into my jar every time I open it (once a day)
Are you suggesting they are fine so long as they are in a pouch?

Why are you opening it once a day that's ridiculous. If you need a dose every day put a weeks worth in a Ziploc or something

Thereβs so much information. A lot of conflicting information or rather, differences in beliefs. Some say dehydrator, others say air dry.
Would you please explain how to properly dry and store? Or share a source you trust?
Thank you π

 Good advice. Regardless of context.
