Danger in your back yard

Parents should be aware of everyday substances teens use to get high.

By Susanne Nadeau

Herald Staff Writer

Morning glories, the brightly colored trumpet-shaped flowers that twine around trellises and garden fences, have an ancient use that teens are rediscovering.

With hard shells, the seeds are raisin colored and about the size of an eraser tip and they contain lysergic acid amide, which is related to, but less potent than, LSD.

The seeds are believed to have been used for ceremonial purposes by the aboriginal people of the Americas.

In fits and spurts around the U.S., kids are looking for a "natural" and cheap way to get high. Instead of looking for these means on street corners, kids are looking into fields and ditches, into grocery and floral stores, and into kitchen cupboards and garden sheds.

"There are a lot of things that kids are using to get high, like morning glory seeds. I heard about kids using caraway seeds. You don't even want to know what they do with that," said Officer Mike Iwan, juvenile investigator for Grand Forks city police.

Caraway seeds are said to be a type of aphrodisiac. Last year, Grand Forks experienced the edge of what is a growing problem of the misuse of poisonous and dangerous plants or plant parts.

Last spring, teens in Grand Forks purchased large quantities of morning glory seeds at Tim Shea's Landscaping and Garden Center. Police and store owners recognized what was going on and cracked down.

So far, there has been no indication of morning glory use this year.

"When it first came up, we were noticing kids who were buying 10 or 12 packs, and some in bulk. We thought 'Wow, you're going to plant a lot of flowers,'" said Darlene Shea, co-owner of the lawn and garden store. "We are definitely watching for that this year. We would call police if we saw that kind of thing again."

Other stores say they're still watching, too. Home of Economy keeps its Heavenly Blues, a type of morning glory that features bright sky-blue trumpet blossoms, behind the service counter, with a purchase limit of two packages.

Iwan said teens are learning about these types of plants right at their fingertips.

"They find the information on the Internet, then pass it around," said Iwan. "It's pretty simple to get a hold of these items."

Internet sites on morning glory seeds are filled with information, from the "personal" accounts of highs derived from the seed to ways in which to remove the insecticides and/or herbicides covering manufactured seeds.

The seeds, if enough are consumed, could potentially cause hallucinations, but are more likely to cause intense nausea and headache. Enough of the seed could cause serious illness.

"A kid is not thinking of long-term effects, not thinking that they are going to die," said Iwan. "They are not thinking about the big picture or of what the consequences are. I am not a medical expert, but this stuff can kill you. Everything just shuts down."

The desire to find a "natural" and cheap high doesn't end with morning glory seeds. Nutmeg powder, a common household spice, can cause a short-term high, with light-headedness, but recovery from ingesting large doses of nutmeg is lengthy and unpleasant. Jimson weed and deadly nightshade are also plants teens across the country have misused in an attempt to get high.

"Right now, we're seeing more huffing, and we're seeing kids try to get a high from cough syrup," Iwan said of Grand Forks' latest concerns.

"It is amazing what is out there. People don't know what will harm their kids. Every parent should be suspicious, not of their child, but of the substances their kids are exposed to. Be suspicious of something that you wouldn't think out of the ordinary at home," said Iwan.

"When you find foilies, or a meth pipe, you know what's going on, but it's the stuff you don't really think about, stuff you might suddenly be missing, common things in the home, that you might have to worry about."

Yeah really. What expert testamony. "I have no knowledge on this stuff whatsoever, but it makes your brain melt and freshens breathe."

Everything just shuts down? Uh....

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Just for the hell of it I looked caraway up and only found that it has some stimulant properties, besides all the medicinal type uses. But overall it doesn't sound like anything you'd do recreationally or anything.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein
