Loph rotting from bottom, how do I save it?
    #28114609 - 12/27/22 10:33 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

I have a really beautiful variegated LW that I got in the mail, unfortunately the root stock was rotting, and I cut it out.  Even worse, there is some rot in the scion itself and the cactus is very squishy.

I cut it a few days back but noticed the rot still came back,  This is the most recent pic.  It looks a bit worse in real life, i.e. browner.

Is it possible to save it and get it to grow its own roots or am I better off just saving the pups?  The top of the cactus as well as the skin are all pretty healthy looking, but like I said, it is very squishy now.

You can see some brown and black spots, there's some calloused area from a previous cut, but it seems no matter how much I cut it now, it won't stop rotting. It has been drying for a day and still looks wet.

Top of the cactus looks okay.

Any tips?  Should I just leave it and wait to see?

Thanks in advance!

This looks real bad to me man, more than likely unsalvageable. Sorry to break it to you, it is a beautiful loph. The reason I say that is because it appears that the rot got into the main vascular tissue down the center. Once that happens, if there isn't enough fresh material to cut off, it's a goner.

You could try grafting just the very tip, but if you take too much you'll bring the rot with it.

Yeah I noticed that under bright light I could see that that the rot actually did penetrate to the top, I cut the whole thing up and salvaged the pups as well as some healthy tissue from the main body for a graft.

The pups seem mostly okay, but it looks like all of the main body is done for...

Unfortunately the pups aren't as beautiful, they are either all green or all yellow :frown:

Any idea if a fully green pup might still  grow a yellow pup since it still has the variegated genes?

It is possible. But in my experience once they revert they don't go back. I think that the SoCal UV has a big part to do with it here, seems to make monstrose and crests revert quite often as well.
