UV fluorescence of Mushrooms
    #28112220 - 12/25/22 04:56 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

UV fluorescence is known to occur in Gymnopilus and said to be helpful in identification.

My question is are any of the lookalikes fluorescent under UV?

Specifically-
Cortinarius
Pholiota
Hyphaloma
Galerina
Flammula
Tricholomopsis

Thanks!

Yes, a lot of the lookalikes of Gymnopilus have spectacular fluorescence!  The colors are likely to be a little different than Gymnopilus UV fluorescence.  I don't have any good photos of Gymnopilus fluorescing, but you can find many here:  https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/uv-fluorescent-organisms

To see just Gymnopilus, or any other genus, see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?captive=any&place_id=any&project_id=12935&subview=map&taxon_id=83198&verifiable=any

Fortunately Gymnopilus are quite easy to identify without UV just by looking at them - they usually have a dry cap, bitter taste, bright orange spores, grow directly from wood and often have a slight licorice odor.  In the USA, the psychoactive ones are easy to identify: On the west coast all the active ones have a cap that is red and squamulose, at least when young.    In the midwest and east all of the active ones are either very large or have squamulose cap.

Here is Cortinarius fuscoflavidus in 365 nanometer UV light

Walking through the woods at night with a UV light is really fun, and you can do a lot of great photography, even with just a cell phone.  It is really important to get a good light - until recently good lights went for around $100, but recently one for $35 has become available.  I got to try one last week and it's just as good as my $100 lights.
