Long(ish) time colonising, need advice
    #28111145 - 12/24/22 02:27 PM (2 years, 24 days ago)

Ho ho ho!

I have a tub that's colonising for more than three weeks. The ratio was 1:1:1 coir, verm, grainspawn. The whole tub seems almost colonised, except from breaking thru the surface.  Which it has done only partially (See pictures)

Sorry for the bad picture quality

Can anyone give ideas what to do about this.

Nothing to do but wait and maintain surface conditions.

Your pics are pretty low quality so it's hard to tell but that's a long time for a 1:1 ratio and the growth doesn't look great. I'm suspecting contamination, but only time will tell. Also, you can take the lid off your tub to take pictures in the future. Taking the lid off once in a while isn't going to hurt anything, just don't be taking it off several times a day to stare at your project.

I didn't post here just to rain on your parade, though. Your 1:1:1 ratio is way out of balance. The most common recipe for Coir/Verm is 650g (dry) coir, 2 quarts of Vermiculite, 1 gallon of water. Use that mix as a substrate. Too much vermiculite can lead to colonization issues, which could also be an issue in your tub.

1:1 is a good spawn ratio if you know you have bacterial spawn. The reason is because at a low ratio you have a better chance of your mycelium colonizing and fruiting faster than the bacteria can fully take over.

1:3 is a pretty standard ratio, but lately I've been running 1:4-5. The higher your spawn ratio the more important it is that you have clean spawn.

Best of luck, keep us posted!

Well... What happened, was the growth was really slow, eventually filling almost the whole substrate though. And finally producing, but only a few mushrooms, about two weeks ago, when I was just about to ditch it. Wasn't worth the effort, but a learning experience as such. I got new stock and started in agar, with good results so far.
