Different sizes? * 2
    #28110235 - 12/23/22 05:42 PM (2 years, 24 days ago)

I can't do anything right, there's all different sizes of fruit, what happened? I got excited when I saw a number of pins but many are slower? Is this abort village? My grandma will punch my face and laugh if there's only a couple viable fruits. I'm scared

what?  dude this is straight pin porn.

Its multi-spore. Without even asking, i know its multispore.  Sometimes MS spawns have the best yields.  This is a hell of a job sir.  Congratulations.

Now.  You want consistency?  Clone something.
Expand the clone plate to a handful of plates.

Spawn them.

Look for the consistency and take a print.

Germ plate it.  Expand that again and take a clone.

Repeat this process approx 6 more times and youll have consistency.

Congratulations . Truly this is a nice tub.

It's nice? Well that's great, thank you much. I was afraid it was aborted village town. I took a clone of another tub that harvested in 17 days from sub seed mixing. That plate got transfered to four other plates.

Yea ms grows are a crap shoot. Awesome or shit or anywhere in between.

A multi iso clone can even produce varied results. An isolate can even give varied results. Much less variation, but I've grown with iso's and had one or two fruits different than the rest(larger for ex) then when I cloned that fruit I got bigger fruits all over.

I like multispore because it's worked pretty good so far and has been relatively easy. This is one of four plates that got transferred from the original fruit plate. I'm new to agar and the condensation backsplashed when opening from package. I'm going to order another small number of plates and transfer again from the best one I have now, hopefully with less backsplash contaminate next time. I'm hoping to preserve this specimen because it grew 50 percent canopy from spore syringe and we ate them air dried 24 days after laying to sub tub. Plus they were strong, I'm relieved you say it isn't ugly abort land.

Even isolated Genetics coming from LC don’t come
Out all the same size at once.  It’s like hitting the lottery if you actually ever make it happen. Nothing wrong with different sizes, some just take a day or two longer to harvest.

Okay..... Bummer, we have pulled 6 really full paper plates of healthy fruit, but the cake has slowed growth to nil with tons of pin heads all over that aren't getting any bigger. We used 6 pounds of rye grain to 10 pounds of substrate.  I'm going to speculate that it was too much seed to manure ratio and we ran out of food energy to keep positive growth happening. Grandma wants me to go back to 2 pounds seed to 5 pounds of sub poo. It was a fun run thou, learned something again. Everytime we bake a cake we learn something new, besides on our cake prior we saw great yield with the 2 pounds to 5 ratio, which tells me that lower ratio is just fine to support go power juice fuel for growth. Another feather in cap, I'm going to give it another 3 days and then scrape the top layer to make space lemon tea. The spores, rye, and sub were from a vendor out of the pnw that isn't supported here but I thought I would give them a try, they had 3 pound rye bags cheap but like I said I'm sticking with 2 pounders in future, unfortunately I have 6 more of the heavier bags baking currently (inoculated). If anyone wants a pic of the current state of cake, massive pin stall, let me know, I'll post. I got to think if there was more sub to the ratio mix that this would have been a fat yield. Thank you for all the responses and direction.

Dont give up on it. Soak that mofo.  fill the tub w water and weigh the sub down with plates or whatevers clever.  try to resaturate and see if you can get them to go.

the second flush should be better. i done told ya, there is such a thing as over-pin but I think you have a good shot at additional flushes.

Okay so shame on us, we've never dunked/soaked a cake. I'm assuming just get the water level up over the top of the cake and like you said keep it weighed down from floating with some weight (example given ceramic plates) and then how long do you let it soak before pouring the water off? In addition won't soaking it pull the trash bag liner off the sides and bottom, (side pinning)??

Edit here.....
Ok just searched it, 12 to 24 hours, while one grower turned the cake upside down when putting back in tub. The other method was weigh the cake down and let the faucet run for 3 hours, (less bacteria).
Honestly we have only been doing one harvest and then composting. More learnings and such! While grandma wants me to wait 3 more days before scraping and flushing, at least we had that right, the cake should be free of old formations prior to dunk.

Tell Grandma settle down.  and dont scrape anything.  Soak and chill.  10 days shouuld produce another full flush.  usually the best fruits come at second flush.  i like to clone out of second flush as do a lot of growers.

i used to flip. i think thats kinda dated now.

Just got morning coffee, scratching head, thinking do we scrape it? Next thought, you say soak and it might get it going again. So I says to myself jumpstart what's pinned already and don't scrape them. Then I check this thread, only to find you confirmed it. Don't
scrape..... Outstanding of you to see my error, thank you. Learningness again

Seeing now there is nil growth we elected to run the faucet, the cake floated as expected so I removed the liner. Put two large ceramic plates on top breaking a ton of pins so then removed them because it wasn't really enough weight to sink the cake. Currently it's just floating with a majority of the cake under the water line, assuming it will act like a sponge we voted to just let it float for 12 hours. I'll drain it off tonight and see what happens.

Edit here
Elected to flip the cake upside down so the harvested side is facing the bottom put plates on the top of it with a small bowl of water on top of the plates to get it completely submerged without the top or the cake touching any of the sides or bottom. As you've probably guessed a little bit of anxiety haven't gotten this far I don't know why I'm so worried when quite frankly I was prepared to throw it in the compost pile so what do I got to lose got to learn how to flush. Grandma says I sound like a wussy biatch wimp

sometimes I will put another tub full of water right on top of it.  Yeah those caps are gonna pop.  please keep me informed.

The fact that it is so difficult to sink tells me that it needs water.  your first big flush, stripped all the water out.

Your spawn to sub ratio is a bit short, generally we recommend 1-3 as the minimum unless your spawn is bacterial.  This means your fruits have less water than they usually get anyway, though it's not the worst thing in the world.  It just means generally, that your fruits will pull all the moisture out of there, and they'll run out of water quicker, which can potentially lead to aborts.

In the future, I'd recommend more sub.

If you've never grown mushrooms before, here's how you start.  First, follow the Updated PF Tek, put 4 holes in jar lids not 1, and use a water tub!
The next move is Shoebox Tek. After that you move onto grains, agar, monotubs.  Agar is easy, just do it.

Thank you again for the direction, assistance, and assurance. This is good for us because as mentioned we have only been harvesting one run and then scraping the top stumps/aborts/knots for tea. If it yields more, great, regardless good experience we have been putting off. Unfortunately didn't clone on first run but will take a look at second flush for possible tissue donor. Grandma just ingested a handful of broken pins and she is flying so that's good bonus. We just got a new tub and a large  inch metal soup can for s.a.b. as I have very very limited agar plate experience while we are enjoying the hobby, our goal is to enough material on hand to grind for grandmas chocolate candy molds.

Edit...
Yes more sub completely agree, wondered why 2 pounders of rye were easier to find then 3. Seems maybe the majority of vendors already know that 2:5 works better than 3:5. If we don't see much in the flush, I'm going to say it ran out of fuel do due ratio. Realizing its about cell division, water and food, what keeps us from just adding fresh sub to a formed cake during later flushes?

Oh, and generally we go by volume rather than weight with spawn to substrate.  Every LB of spawn is roughly 1.25 quarts, yet a LB of sub is probably 2.5+ quarts.  So your ratio may not be as off as I thought.  I've never done it by weight so I don't know for sure, I'm just using my best estimates.

If my assumptions here are correct, than your spawn/sub ratio might be better than I assumed.  6*1.25 + 10*2.5 = 7.50:25

These are all my assumptions though, like I said I have no great idea on the exact numbers.  Give what my math put out I have to assume my estimates aren't great.

By your math it looks close to 1:3 by volume, we shall see how the second flush goes. To be honest Grandma and I felt when we originally layering this cake that it seemed like way to much seed to sub vs. when we did previous smaller cakes with less seed by weight to fixed amount of sub (5lbs). We are going out on a limb as novice hobbyist seeing it colonized fast, pinned immensely, ran out of fuel and aborted. Fingers crossed with the 12 hour swimming float dunk flush weighted upside down, which sounds like some kind of sick Navy Seal training. Was waiting on agar plates by post to try out new still air box, but no delivery today. So we're just sitting by the drowning pool, lol. Thanks for taking the time as we appreciate it

In the future, you can bottom water and mist the top.  That's how I do it nowadays, though in the past I was a dunker.

Pour water down the side of the tub, let it absorb as much as it can, pour it out at the end of the night or in the morning, then do it again, misting heavily whenever you can during the day.  Do that for 2-3 days and your sub will be fully hydrated.  More and more water will be remaining in the bottom, once it seems like it's done absorbing it, you're good.

That sounds less invasive, easier on the cake, because whenever Im handling it, the lil pins break.
Beef is right, there is better clone specimen selection on the second round. They are much bigger and the veils don't break so early. We have one that is getting close to the diameter of a .25 cent quarter coin in diameter at the middle of stem, maybe I'm calling it a bigger fish at the water cooler but it's well over a nickel. We haven't seen anything that fat before.
Room was a lil cool, turned up space heater a couple degrees and found new mycelium on inoculated bags, another tub had a jump in growth/new pins, and then this cake showed positive growth, all over night. Happy, very.

I'll be honest, I got distracted halfway through and didn't read all of this thread.

That said:

I work exclusively with clones, and could give a fuck about consistent flushes of same-sized fruit. Or side and bottom pins. I just pick it all as it comes in. And move the substrate to a bigger container if it's a side-pin city situation.

One thing that sometimes gets lost in these discussions is that the first thing cloning "selects" for is just compatible strains of mycelium that'll produce fruit together.

Beyond that, I personally am just selecting for potency, aggressive growth in my conditions, sick pinsets, and the ability to pin quickly. But I still know I'm mainly just selecting combinations of mycelium that are compatible.

It's great and admirable that some people are really getting down and finding genetics that allow for uniform flushes of equal size, and maintaining conditions that create an easily harvested top-canopy. But that's only one of many potential end goals. Not everyone cares about harvesting all at once, bag appeal, etc...

Funfarm, for multispore, you've got a great pinset.

In my experience, pins don't make it to adulthood for only one of three reasons:
-not enough water
-not enough FAE
-contamination

Aside from managing moisture and FAE, the only effective tool we have in the fruiting stage, IMHO, is pre-emptive pruning.

Beware of advice- even this.

Very very interesting, thank you for the input. Scratching chin, yes this was a two bag, 2 syringe grow. I'm liking your view, quick fast strong. In your 3 terms of non producing pins, it's plenty wet, contaimenation, none to the naked eye. Last fae, we are already planning on bigger soup can punch outs. Again thanks for input it makes me gears turn and helps hone skillz. Liked the bigger container to get sides, frankly, we are thinking one liner harvest, dunk and transfer to roomier tub.

Second flush.... Much Bigger fruits, more weight. Actually greater yield after dunking. Had no agar on hand to take clone. Going to order more spores same strain from vendor and have plates on hand. Dosed a 7 day air dryed gram... Strain is super strong effect, maybe a lil too intense. Huge fan of the tpe6 strain

Nah, I've grown on hpoo for a long time but there's no point in consuming poo when you have plates of fruit.

Makes zero sense but it's your choice.
