casing not pinning yet
    #2810862 - 06/20/04 11:56 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

its been 11 days since a foaf placed his casing in the fruiting chamber and there is still no pinning...should he be worried, or just keep waiting it out? the casing may have possibly been exposed to slightly higher than ideal humidity in the first few days, if that makes any difference

IME this is not possible. In fact, you want as close to 100 % humidity as possible for initiation. Only after you see pins do you want to lower the humidity to 88% or so.

based on some of your personal experience...what is the general time it takes for pinning to occur in casings? i have 2 casings and i'm just wondering when things should start rolling.

It comes down to initiation conditions and strain. Strain "a" with perfect conditions could take 4 days to pin where strain "b" would take 10. "perfect conditions" can be relative to strain (or even substrain): so strain "a"'s perfect conditions may differ from strain "b"'s.

IOW get the conditions right, and you will soon see how long YOUR strain takes to pin...

so if i want humidity as high as possible before pins start, should i see small beads of moisture on the casing surface? if not, what should i do to prevent that?

another thing...if high humidity is desirable before pinning, what causes overlay?

Misting you casing to much on its surface.

(which casuses the thick matted overlay)

One thing I have learned, less is more, with casing layers anyway.

Thin while still giving some moisture is best , a thick casing layer leads to problems even if you dont get overlay IMO.
(its a fine balance, like life)

As long as it is just tiny spots, it is fine, you don't want pools. You don't want water droplets to stream into the casing from the sides of the chamber/ casing tray either. **underspraying is better than overspraying!**

Overlay, IMO is mainly from insufficient air flow. Any condition or group of conditions that prolong ther amount of time it takes to get to pinning, can contribute to "overlay". As numerous people have posted lately, nearly colonised casings are often misdiagnosed as overlayed.
