Truffle???
    #2804681 - 06/18/04 05:49 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Me and my gnome were walking around school where we both noticed a small light brown round thing that looked like a rock. We loooked closer and we touched it, definetely not a rock, we dig it out and wow!  it is a shroomy. May it be a truffle? it has a very strong scent of mush and it was growing underground in wet ground. BTW we are in Australia, melbourne. so fellow shroomers im wondering, is this a truffle?

The surface looks smoother than the true truffles I've seen. There are also a whole bunch of genera of related false truffles.

Try cutting it in half and showing us the inside. If you can, try to cut it in half vertically. Of course, with many truffles and false truffles the hard part is figuring out where the top is so you can do that. True truffles are marbled and solid inside and show no signs of a columnella (vestigial stem).

Happy mushrooming!

http://www.truffle.org/

Not sure but I found this right off on the google end of things. Didn't look terribly like the pictures I browsed through on this site. I was of the impression that truffles were strictly a European phenomenon, but I could be wrong and I forget that Australia is a land of import. God- does anyone know anything about truffles?!

There are several species of the genus Tuber (true truffles) that are native to North America. You should also note that one of the historical early sources of truffles was northern Africa.

I've been to several lectures (and some forays) by Dr Jack States, one of the authorities on what he calls hypogeous (underground) fungi (which includes truffles). They're very different in many ways from the usual mushrooms, and very probably descended from them. True truffles are more or less equivalent to underground versions of morels - both are Ascomycetes, while most false truffles are Basidiomycetes.

Another odd fact - *none* of the truffles are poisonous. There are *no* recorded cases of poisoning due to them. Their spores need to travel through an animal's digestive system before they can germinate, so being eaten by an animal is a necessary part of their life cycle.

Happy mushrooming!

Oops - I just looked through my Audubon at the tuber gibbosum. And found many things pertaining to what you said Toxicman. My bad- I have never even thought about truffles seriously before. They are truly an interesting group of mushrooms. This post is highly inspirational.

philosiphers stones...? [Re: ToxicMan]

Hi toxicman, re your above post "Another odd fact - *none* of the truffles are poisonous. There are *no* recorded cases of poisoning due to them...", would that include the so-called 'philosiphers stones'...? these are PA, and some books list anything PA as 'toxic'...

Truffles are members of the genus Tuber, so no, "philosophers stones" wouldn't be included. I probably should have been clearer and phrased it as True Truffles.

As far as False Truffles, I know that Dr States got some of his grad students to eat some as an experiment. He said everybody said they were vile. There were also no poisonings from them. I seem to recall that most (if not all) of the specimens consumed were various species of Rhizopogon.

So called "philosophers stones" are actually sclerotia. They are distinguishable from the various truffles by the fact that truffles (false and true) are fruiting bodies and sclerotia are not. That is, truffles produce spores and sclerotia do not.

Happy mushrooming!
