I just bought some WBS. A couple questions
    #2809223 - 06/19/04 07:04 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I didnt buy any jars. What type should i get? cant i just use like a mayonaise jar?

And the procedure is hard to find round here-

So, basically i mix wbs and vermiculite 50/50 and sterilize int he jar? I know i leave it shallow so i can shake it up later when growth starts. When i sterilize, can i boil the WBS in water first to hydrate and pre-clean it? Does it leave the seed in tact enough?

you're actualy mixing teks here.... if you use WBS you want to leave out the vermiculite... and you will need a Pressure Cooker to handle whole grains sterilization...

Pick up some wide mouth 1/2 pint canning jars and brown rice flour, coarse grind is acceptable if you have to grind it yourself... the PF tek needs no pressure cooker, th substrate can be steam sterilized

here is the link to the PF tek

This link is for whole grains like Birdseed and Rye...

the majority of information can be found through the link at the top of the page called FAQ... heres a quick shortcut

let us know how it works out for you, I always enjoyed posting about my attempts that werent successful because others can learn from my experementation, I probably have one of the largest collection of contaminant cultures in world... when I find some extra time I will probably start torturing the little mushies as I have in the past...

I had a lot of success with BRF cakes but when I tried to steam sterilize WBS and rye I had zero success. Millet worked OK (about 50% contamination ratio) but what I learned is that it is a waste of the materials and time if you don't have a pressure cooker for these substrates.
